Overview

The 911 line-up over the years is as compelling as it is impressive but there are still certain stand out tracks – particular iterations of Porsche's perennially popular powerhouse that stand just that little bit taller and shine just a tad brighter than the rest.

Of course, any such “top models” list will be subjective but it's generally accepted by the motoring press and public alike that cars like the original 911 F R, second-gen 911 G Turbo and 996 GT3 RS are among those highlights.

There's another, too. A particular 911 that commands equal levels of respect and fascination thanks to its bona fide performance credentials and striking looks. A hyper-focussed distillation of the marque, the Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera RS is what can happen when engineers are left alone to be, well, engineers.

Closing the door on marketing focus groups and number-obsessed accountants, the 2.7 Carrera RS was designed and built to be the best 911 it could be and if that meant thinner body panels and a huge “duck tail” spoiler to improve rear end grip and cornering ability then so be it.

The trouble is nowadays a proper 2.7 Carrera RS is pretty much unobtanium for most, with cars selling for well into six figures. But there is a way for us mere mortals to get in on the action, and that's with an evocation model, just like this right-hand drive example.

At the other end of the spectrum from a janky replica, or an M badge stuck to the back of a 520d, this Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera RS is built upon an already pretty special car – an original and super rare 1972 2.4 911 E oil flap model – and the results are nothing short of spectacular.

Upgraded to RS spec and with an engine rebuild in 2022 the car comes complete with a comprehensive file documenting a spend of £77,000 to bring it up to race car standards. Despite being over 50 years old the car remains in excellent condition throughout and would make a perfect hill climb or classic series track weapon.

FIA-registered, the car placed 5th at the 2018 Le Mans Classic so what you get is a proven historic racer with serious provenance, and with recent engine and suspension tuning work, it's ready to rock and roll.

Summary

This Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera RS evocation is a great example of replicas done right and just one look at the amount spent and the collection of invoices tells you everything you need to know. Not only that but this 911 was an excellent car to begin with. Arguably better than the real deal because you won't be scared to actually use it and enjoy the thing it presents as a wonderful entry not only into classic Porsche ownership but also historic racing. A win-win then.
