Overview

The third generation of BMW Minis has justly earned a reputation for being solid, reliable and well-built, with the Cooper S offering everyday thrills in a remarkably entertaining package. The example we have here is arguably the perfect spec: firstly, it’s the 3-door. Secondly, it’s got the 6-speed manual. And thirdly, it’s finished in that oh-so desirable shade of metallic Electric Blue.

The seller fastidiously maintains and looks after his cars, and is also a serial Mini owner with a keen eye for a quality car. There are a fair few F56 Cooper Ss on the market, but this one stood out to him when he bought it for its outstanding spec as well as its lovely overall condition and good history. 

It’s had a decent chunk of money spent on it over the last year too, including a full Bosch Gold Plus service a few months ago, a fresh new set of Falken tyres all round, a new battery, and a Scorpion stainless steel exhaust system. This is a resonated cat-back setup, the pricier option that comes with an extra silencer, so it’s not obnoxiously boomy or raucous, but provides a deep and pleasing tone. (Of course, being a Mini, it’ll also deliver some entertaining pops and crackles when you drive the car in Sport mode!)

The most recent upgrade is a Cravenspeed induction kit. It’s an interesting quirk of these engines that if you fit them with an open cone filter, it gives the sound some proper rally car vibes and really accentuates the whistle of the turbo and the chatter of the wastegate (as you can hear in the accompanying video). The car will also come with its original Mini air box, which can very easily be swapped back in if the soundtrack isn’t to your taste.

The quality BMW construction means that there’s a pleasingly luxurious feel inside the cabin. The half-leather seats are extremely supportive and very comfy on long journeys; there’s a little wear to the driver’s side bolster but otherwise it all looks nice and fresh. The car’s been retro-fitted with Apple CarPlay connectivity as well – hidden inside the glovebox is a connector to plug in your iPhone, and the CarPlay works correctly with the dash screen and iDrive controller.

This, then, is a beautifully presented and well specced example of an outstanding driver’s car: it’s comfortable and cosseting while also being a real hoot on a winding B-road, with effervescent performance and very reassuring reliability.

Summary

The shifting sands of car-buying habits are making the hot hatch a bit of a relic today; something that everybody kinda wants, but they’re all busy buying SUVs. But there’s still a thirst for these cars among right-minded people. A hot hatch has always represented the best of all worlds: everyday practicality coupled with knuckle-whitening speed and delectable handling prowess, plus room for the family – and a Mini Cooper S provides all of this in spades. And what better way to enjoy that than with this fabulous example? It’s got the right look, the right spec, some highly desirable upgrades,  it’s been lovingly maintained and it’s utterly delightful to drive.
