Overview

BMW describes the E61 M5 Touring – its first ever M-series production estate – as the perfect all rounder, and we find it incredibly difficult to refute that particular statement, rather self-aggrandising though it is. But if the shoe fits... Here was a 507bhp, V10-equipped estate car with sports suspension that could ferry your broken washing machine to the tip faster than you can say “where's the nearest household waste recycling centre?”, all in supreme comfort. 

With a subtly understated design the E61 M5 Touring definitely falls under the 'wolf in sheep's' clothing umbrella and it was the last of BMW's super saloons and estate cars to be powered by a naturally aspirated engine. And oh my, what an engine!

Inspired by BMW's Formula 1 shenanigans the 5.0-litre V10 was built from scratch for the M5 and remains one of the best powerplants to ever inhabit an engine bay. Mated to a seven-speed SMG gearbox It could propel the E61 M5 Touring from stationary to 60mph in a staggeringly quick four-and-a-half seconds.

A supremely capable car, they're not exactly common so when one does come up for sale ears are always pricked and interest is piqued, especially when it's as good as this particular 2007 example. With full service history it has clearly been cherished and currently presents in beautiful condition throughout. Not only that but the car benefits from a full Eventuri carbon fibre plenum and induction kit, as well as Hayward and Scott custom-made exhaust back boxes – popular after market modifications that elevate this E61 M5 Touring above the pack whilst also making it sound absolutely incredible.

Interior

• The black leather interior is well kept and in excellent condition

• It has an Apple CarPlay upgrade which can be operated via the BMW iDrive wheel (the standard interface all still works perfectly)

• Carpets and headlining are all excellent

• Door cards and dashboard appear to be in great shape 

• All gauges and switches, along with the infotainment screen appear to be fully functional (the onboard diagnostic tool shows no faults)

• The vendor informs us that the air conditioning works properly and the stereo is superb with the wireless CarPlay

• The vendor states that the rear parking sensors aren't functioning properly - it cuts to the screen but the sensors aren't recognised

• Soft close doors

• All factory accessories look to be present and correct

• The engine bay presents well and looks great with the carbon fibre plenum

• The boot space is in equally good condition

Exterior

• The bodywork looks to be in excellent condition overall

• No apparent dents or damage to note

• The vendor informs us that the panoramic roof and rear hatch work perfectly

• There is a small area of lacquer peel on the bonnet

• Some light stone chips to the front bumper commensurate with age and mileage

• The original 19” wheels present well but there is some slight curb damage to the offside front and a small paint chip to the offside rear

• All tyres are Michelin Pilot Sport 4s and the vendor informs us that the rears are in better condition than the fronts but all tread depths are within the legal limit

• The underside looks to be in fine condition with no signs of damage or rust, although there is some light pitting to the exhaust tips

Summary

Incredibly adept, especially comfortable and devastatingly quick, this BMW E61 M5 Touring could well be all the car you'll ever need. The fact that it comes with full service and maintenance history and some tasteful but really rather welcome upgrades is just the icing on the cake. One car to rule them all? Quite possibly.
