Overview
The Japanese proved that they could make affordable and engaging modern sports cars when Mazda unleashed its seminal MX-5 into the wild back in 1989. Honda then applied the same logic to its NSX a year later and took the supercar world by storm, but it's perhaps the company's other two-seater from '99 that made more of a splash, or at least a similarly sized one.
Refreshingly free from pressure from the marketing department, the Honda S2000 was developed almost purely as a technological study, and it's all the better for it. Based upon a concept that was in turn derived from Honda's first Formula One car, this new two-seater sports car was an instant hit.
Featuring an inline four-cylinder DOHC engine with Honda's now legendary VTEC variable valve timing gubbins mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and a Torsen limited slip diff it ticked all the right boxes and peak power topped out at around 240bhp, which was the highest output of a naturally aspirated production car engine in the world at the time, at least according to the people who made it. Whatever the case it's a peach of a powerplant.
The S2000 was significantly updated in 2003 with improved suspension but the engine remained untouched, such was its inherent abilities, and that's exactly what we have available here – a 2007 Honda S2000 AP2, the best of the bunch and free from the snappy oversteer that plagued earlier cars.
Clearly cherished throughout its life the car presents beautifully, both externally and on the inside and looks the quintessential sports car in a stunning shade of red. Having covered less than 36K miles it has plenty of life left and being a Honda means it's blessed with inherently good build quality and reliability, with the current owner confirming that the car starts, goes and stops exactly as it should, and sounds great doing it. A fresh MOT completes the package.

Summary
A truly wonderful example of high revving analogue sports cars from years gone by, this S2000 makes for a rather tempting proposition. Robustly engineered and with a cracking engine it's a great alternative to rivals from the likes of Porsche and a still fervent fan base and after market will surely keep you in its good graces. They don't make them like this any more so grab one while you can. We're pretty sure you won't regret it, especially when that VTEC-equipped four-pot is on song.
