Overview
Buying and indeed owning a Porsche 911 can be prohibitively expensive for the vast majority of petrolheads, but there is a way for us mere mortals to enjoy everything that's great about these legendary sports cars without having to remortgage the house, take on a second job or sell a kidney.
Buy smart and and those iconic lines and that six-cylinder boxer engine performance can be yours without having to shell out for a 2.7 RS or 997 GT3, for example. You see, there are models out there that perhaps weren't as well received in period as they should have been, like the 996 for instance. But time is a great healer and many of those original nay sayers are coming around to the fact that the 996 generation of 911, produced from 1997 to 2005, is actually an incredibly capable and stylish machine.
Derided for their water-cooled engines and Boxster styling the 996 was, and still is, a cracking car. It was pivotal in helping the 911, and indeed Porsche, to stay relevant and at the cutting edge of sports car manufacturing.
The original 996 Carrera is arguably the purest of the bunch with the post-2002 face lit models being the more desirable due to their larger, 3.6-litre six-cylinder engines driving the rear wheels, which is exactly what we have here in the form of this 2003 Porsche 911 996 Carrera.
With a 0-60mph time of 5.6 seconds and a top speed of 178mph it's certainly got the performance but it also looks superb with its black on back colour scheme. Throw in that all-important service history (including the IMS bearing), low mileage and a long MOT and what you get is a fine example of a modern classic 996 that could very well be your ticket into 911 ownership.

Summary
When it comes to 911s, whatever the generation or cost, a low mileage car with comprehensive service history is always going to be desirable, which is exactly the case here. The fact that it's a black on black example in excellent condition throughout is just the icing on the cake so if you're after an affordable iconic German sports car you may just have to call off the search.
