Overview

It may not have been hot hatch genesis but Peugeot's 205 GTI certainly took the souped-up shopper ball and ran all the way to the end zone with it, helping to define the genre in the process and becoming a benchmark for all future sporty hatchbacks.

But that was the '80s. Could the plucky French hit another home run a decade later? We're not quite sure what these American sporting references are all about but what we do know is that Peugeot did indeed follow up the 205 GTI with another absolute banger -  the 306 GTI-6.

Introduced in 1996 the 306 GTI-6 produced 167bhp from its naturally-aspirated, 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, which mated to a six-speed manual gearbox was enough for an official 0-60mph time of 8.5-seconds, although many claim this figure was downplayed by Peugeot and sub 8 seconds is easily achievable in the right hands. A 135mph top speed completes the performance stats but it's how the car handled that set it apart from the rabble.

This particular low mileage, 1998 example has been in the same single family ownership from new and comes complete with excellent service and maintenance history as well as a long, advisory-free MOT until July next year.

In truly lovely original condition both inside and out this rare hot hatch harks back to a time when Peugeot still made incredibly fun and exciting cars, so why not treat yourself and indulge in a really rather special slice of '90s nostalgia? Prices are only likely to go one way, and it's not down.

Summary

Arguably better than the 205 GTI that inspired it, the Peugeot 306 GTI-6 also has the added bonus of forgoing that earlier car's pumped up price tag. It's a rare beast too, with only around 4,500 being sold in the UK, so when one comes to market, especially in this condition and mileage, well, you'd better sit up and take notice. A superlative hot hatch and one that will forever be revered in that most compelling of genres.
