Overview

When the first MX-5s rolled off the production line way back in the mists of time, they had a name to make. This little roadster had been conceived as a continuation of the quintessential two-seater sports car, and boy did it impress the crowd. Not only did it resuscitate the very idea of a lightweight, affordable sports car accessible to everyone, but it breathed a whole new lease of life into this neglected corner of the market. Testament to that initial success is that Mazda is still producing the MX-5, over 35 years since it first burst onto the scene.

The example we see here is a third-generation model — or ‘NC’ to those in the know — which also caused a stir on its launch. Fans of the original were horrified that Mazda had realised people wanted a bit more comfort in their sporting roadsters. So the NC gains refinement and trades off a bit of weight gain, a compromise which many buyers were very happy to make. Just look at the sales figures.

So this is a slightly more usable iteration of an already very usable car. The MX-5 is well renowned for populating a vanishingly small section of the automotive Venn diagram: being a sportscar which you could conceivably use as your everyday runabout without issue.

The deep blue paintwork on this particular car is a very suave choice, and the black interior is superbly well presented, with barely any sign of use. You only have to look at the car’s online MOT record to realise that it has been well treated: there is an unbroken string of MOT passes without advisories stretching all the way back to 2011.

Recent public opinion has been rather upbeat about this generation of MX-5, seeing it for its true worth as a car which can be superb fun to drive, but will happily chew up the motorway miles when you want to take it to the other side of the country.

Summary

Sitting in the snug yet comfortable cabin of this car, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s barely been used. Clearly it’s not a modern car — there are no enormous touchscreens or yapping reminder messages — but it feels newer than it deserves to. And that perfect combination of manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive, and a proper handbrake mean you’ll never be bored again.
