Overview

2007/8 was a vintage year for V8 enthusiasts, with the E9X M3, Audi’s RS4, and Mercedes-Benz’ C63 AMG, and it’s the foremost of this trio that we have here on offer.

The first (and to date, only) V8-powered M3 in the brand’s history, the E9X was destined to be a collector’s item from the moment it was unveiled to the world in 2007, and retains a strong following to this day, both in coupe (E92) and saloon (E90) configurations. 

Despite its thumping V8 at its core, the E9X was no slouch, with Pistonheads writer Mike Duff describing the chassis as “having both a front end as faithful as an old collie and a rear axle that could easily be turned as playful as a Labrador puppy” which is just how an M3 should be. Yes, it might not have quite the analogous feel of its predecessor, but it’s hard to argue with the headline performance increase, and that V8 noise… it's just… so… good!

This example was first registered in 2008, and has been in the care of its current owner for verging on six years. Evidently cared for throughout its lifetime (the seller points to the fact that the all-important running in service was carried out) and benefiting from a rare specification and optional EDC, this is an M3 that is ready to use and enjoy, but sits a cut above the majority of those on the market today, given that it is devoid of any modifications, tasteful or otherwise.

Interior

• Rare Palladium Silver leather interior with carbon detailing

• Overall, the interior of this M3 is in very good condition, a credit to both BMW’s build quality and the care of its owners

• Optional heated seats and sliding armrest

• In the rear, the boot carpet is lightly stained/worn

• We note that the M3 door sill inserts are starting to wear and corrode

• Both the front and rear seats are in excellent condition, with only some expected wear to the outer driver and passenger seat bolsters, and virtually no signs of use to the rear seats

• The original stereo and iDrive system have been retained

• The seller reports that there are no known faults or issues, and all systems are working as BMW intended

Exterior

• Jerez Black paintwork with factory carbon-fibre roof

• The condition of the bodywork and paintwork is excellent overall, having reportedly never been driven in the winter or on salted roads

• We’re told by the seller that the paintwork is believed to be original throughout, and that the carbon roof has not been changed from the factory appearance

• Looking closer, there are some scratches on the mirror caps, light imperfections on the carbon roof and patination to the external badging

• A new E92 M3 trunk badge has been ordered, and will be put on prior to the auction ending

• The front end and exposed edges exhibit the usual smattering of stone chips to be expected on a performance vehicle such as this

• Specced from factory with optional power folding mirrors

• Both offside wheels show kerb damage and corrosion to the outer faces

• The seller notes that the missing wheel bolts have now been replaced

• It is reported that the underside of this M3 is ‘rust free’ on account of its seasonal use and careful maintenance 

Mechanical

• 3,999cc naturally aspirated ‘S65’ V8 engine, producing 414bhp and 295 lb-ft of torque

• Seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with paddle shifters and adjustable levels of shifting

• Rear-wheel drive

• Plenty of tread left on all 4 tyres.

• The engine bay itself looks to be in excellent condition and presents well

• Brand new battery has also been fitted recently

• No modifications from factory specification - an increasingly rare sight for those looking for an E90 or E92 M3

Summary

With its crown as the only V8-equipped M3 in the history of the marque, the E9X M3 was a collector’s item from the get-go, and continues to enjoy strong popularity amongst both marque and driving enthusiasts alike to this day. With a rousing soundtrack, lightning-fast DCT shifts and extensive aftermarket support, this generation of M3 looks set to enjoy its popularity for many years to come.

Offered for sale with less than 70,000 miles on the clock, this unmodified, factory-spec M3 would make for a great addition to any M enthusiast’s garage.
