Overview

Porsche rocked the boat when they introduced the 996 iteration of the long-lived 911 family of sportscars. They blindsided their loyal customer base when they announced that it would be fitted with a water-cooled engine — technology which everyone else had long since accepted as the default way of regulating an engine’s temperature. There were gasps and stunned silences, but it didn’t take long for most people to accept that they had done the right thing in order to keep producing the much-loved 911.

The Carrera 4S model of 996 brings the car even more up to date, with its four-wheel drive allowing the performance of that 3.6-litre engine to really shine through. Coupled here with a six-speed manual transmission it means you can have joyous fun every time you pop out to the shops.

This particular example is in very shiny condition — especially when you consider that it’s over twenty years old — having been detailed, and been treated to a refurb of the alloy wheels. The silver paint and bodywork all look like they’ve been well protected over the years.

Accompanied by a long MOT (to Aug 2026) and having had plenty of parts replaced in 2024, including brakes, exhaust parts, and fluids, there’s even more reason to believe that this car has been carefully maintained. The cylinder bores were even inspected and found to be in good condition. A reassuring statement to hear when looking at any sportscar.

Summary

Now considered something of a ‘modern classic’ the 996 blazed a trail which all subsequent 911s have since followed. It stands as a beacon of both change and continuity. On the threshold between classic and modern. The best of both worlds.
