Overview

It may be hard to believe for some (we did in fact have to double check) but the Audi TT will be 28 years old next year, which is incredible to think really, seeing as how good the original Mk1 still looks today. We'd actually go as far as calling it a bit of a style icon and the TT was the catalyst for reinvigorating Audi's design language.

A huge hit upon release the TT would remain in production for a quarter of a century across three generations, such was its popularity and the car would continue to evolve over the years but the original will always hold a special place in many people's hearts.

The Mk1, produced from '98 to 2006, was originally only available as a coupe but a roadster would join the line-up a year later. Utilising a transversely mounted 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder in two different states of tune the TT produced 178bhp and 222bhp respectively, with the latter also benefiting from Audi's acclaimed Quattro four-wheel drive system. A 3.2-litre VR6 version joined the party in 2003 which upped power to 247bhp, solidifying the TT as a car to be reckoned with in the sports car scene.

Of the lot though, it's perhaps the limited edition clubsport-esque 237bhp Quattro Sport released in 2005 that's the Goldilocks option. There's more than enough power to satiate the speed freaks and the four-wheel drive and six-speed manual gearbox increase driver appeal over the stock TT and the car remains a proper driver’s edition of Audi’s venerable sportster. With more power, a sportier chassis and firmer suspension the Quattro Sport is also lighter, further cementing it as a more driver-focussed option overall.

This particular Quattro Sport looks great in its all black colour scheme and the condition of the car is excellent throughout. The vendor informs us there is decent service history and a long MOT should keep any doubts at bay as to the car's mechanical integrity.

Summary

Today the first gen Audi TT represents an affordable and stylish modern classic, with the 237bhp Quattro Sport providing a still exciting turn of pace, and with grip for days thanks to the four-wheel drive, combined with that manual gearbox, turns even the humblest of trips into a mini adventure.

A fitting homage to the iconic Quattro, it’s a rare beast produced in limited numbers and this particular example is an eminently usable car with plenty of joy still to be gleaned from its sporty characteristics. It looks great, reportedly drives well and is mechanically sound to boot so have at it!
