Overview

With a rowdy exhaust note from its Record Monza system, a turbocharged ‘Twinair’ engine and stiffer chassis, the Abarth 124 Spider is far more than a ND-chassis MX-5 wearing a sharp Italian suit; think of it instead as a Hiroshima local that has emigrated to Turin, learnt the language (including all the swear words) and gained themselves a sense of Mediterranean style, but stayed true to their roots and retained all the best parts of their heritage.

Sadly, despite its attractions, the 124 Spider (in both Fiat and Abarth form) never quite captured the imagination of the wider public here in the UK, and is therefore a far rarer sight on the used market than its stepbrother the MX-5. Therefore, if it's rarity you’re after, you’re on the right track…

This particular Abarth 124 Spider is rarer still, being a one-owner-from-new example, and chassis 296 of the first 500 examples delivered. Having covered under 8,000 miles from new and with annual services by the supplying dealer irrespective of mileage, if you’ve been holding out for the ‘right’ 124 Spider, then this is the one you’ve been waiting for.

History and documentation

  • Registered 30 Sep 2016, supplied by Wessex Garages Fiat in Cardiff

  • Stamped service book with services as follows: Oct 2017 @ 1,019 miles, Oct 2018 @ 2,509 miles, Sep 2019 @ 3,566 miles, Sep 2020 @ 4,177 miles, Sep 2021 @ 4,367 miles, Sep 2022 @ 4,782 miles, Sep 2023 @ 5,894 miles, Sep 2024 @ 6,723 miles, Sep 2025 @ 7,425 miles

  • The supplying dealer stopped being a Fiat garage in 2017 so rather than make an annual trip to Bristol, it was serviced by an ex Fiat dealership (now specialist) in Cardiff - Alpha & Yapps
  • Full document pack

  • Two keys

  • Current MOT with no advisories expires 29 Sep 2026

  • V5 present in owner’s name

  • The seller notes that this 124 Spider has been used as a weekends and special occasions car, and only driven in good summer weather

  • Garaged from new

  • HPI clear

  • London ULEZ compliant

Interior

  • Black and red two-tone interior in excellent condition

  • Rear bulkhead plaque confirming this is chassis 296 of the first 500 cars delivered

  • Alcantara lower dashboard, centre arm rest, handbrake and gearstick gaiters, and upper driver instrument binnacle

  • Heated seats

  • We note some scuffs and scratches to the lower door jamb trims

  • The outer bolster of the driver’s seat is slightly distorted, but not ripped or worn away

  • There are a few areas of very light usage patina on the high-traffic switches, toggles and levers, but these are commensurate with the vehicle’s low mileage

  • In the rear, the tool kit is present, and other than needing a vacuum, the carpets are clean and stain-free throughout

  • No reported faults

  • Overall, an incredibly well-kept cabin befitting of its low mileage and ownership

Exterior

  • Portogallo 1974 Grey bodywork in very good condition

  • The front end shows a handful of stone chips, as expected from a low-slung sports car such as this

  • Looking closely, we’d highlight a small scratch on the offside rear quarter, some small chips to the door edges, and a small area of scuffs on the lower nearside corner of the rear bumper

  • The nearside rear edge of the front bumper (ahead of the front wheel) shows some contact damage/rubbing

  • A small scuff is visible on the area just below the driver’s door aperture

  • Up above, the folding soft-top looks to be in excellent shape with no rips or tears

  • All four wheels would benefit from refurbishment

  • The tyres are reported to have 4mm+ tread left, but they are the original 2016-dated Bridgestone items

  • Overall, a very well-kept example of the Abarth 124 Spider finished in a timeless colour

Mechanical

  • 1368cc Fiat turbocharged inline-four ‘Twinair’ engine

  • 168bhp and 184lb-ft of torque

  • Six-speed manual gearbox

  • Limited-slip differential as standard

  • Brembo brakes

  • ‘Record Monza’ exhaust system

  • No modifications from factory

  • Brand new battery was fitted in Jan 2026 which has a 5 year warranty which is transferable to the new owner
  • Reported to be in excellent mechanical health, further substantiated by the annual servicing from new and clean MoT certificate

Summary

For those that like the MX-5 driving experience but want a little more Italian flair and sense of occasion, the Abarth 124 Spider is just the ticket. Offering everything that’s great about the MX-5 but adding a stiffer chassis, better-sprung suspension and a shorter shift - as well as a turbocharged engine - there are few better accessible convertibles that will give you such a grin on your face as you drive off into the sunset, with a raucous exhaust note following in your wake.

Offered for sale in excellent condition throughout and benefitting from just one owner and under 8,000 miles from new, this Spider would make for an excellent addition to any garage, whether as a weekend toy or a car to make everyday adventures fun again.
