Overview
Golf is the answer to almost all car-related situations. Want a hot hatch? Golf. Need a sensible family car? Golf. Want a car that has plenty of street cred and style but without the premium price tag of an Audi or BMW? Golf. Essentially, if you need a car, you can always argue a case for a Golf.
Thankfully for us PHers, there are those variants of Golf that are more suited for those that WANT a car, rather than NEED one, but without losing any of the practicality of its more pedestrian stablemates. For those in VW circles, the general consensus is that the fifth-generation GTI (that’s the Mk V for forum dwellers) is regarded as a high-water mark for the GTI; plenty of comfort, style and performance, without being inundated with overbearing safety systems, detached driving characteristics or unnecessary tat.
For those that like their GTI on the rare side, VW has produced a number of limited-run models over the years, and few are more coveted than the Edition 30. More than just some colour-coded bumpers and BBS wheels (fantastic though they are) the Edition 30 (henceforth referred to as the Ed30 for ease) received a boost in power, 15mm suspension drop, stiffer roll-bars and an iconic Interlagos tartan interior.
This particular example benefits from an exclusively main-dealer service history in the current ownership of 10+ years, and is mercifully free from any aftermarket modifications or ‘upgrades’ as some call them. Whilst it shows its age in a few places, it makes a strong case as an example that is usable everyday, or ripe for a little freshening-up to bring it back to its best whilst being free of any immediate need for attention.

-
The cabin presents in fair condition throughout
-
The seller notes a small cigarette burn in the driver’s seat base
-
All four seats show some signs of staining and wear, though a thorough valeting and/or steam cleaning would likely go a long way toward remedying this
-
The outer bolsters for both front seats are showing wear consistent with the car’s age and mileage
-
The steering wheel and gear shifter are heavily worn and patinated
-
Elsewhere, there is some light patination to the typical high-traffic areas
-
In the rear, the spare wheel and tool kit is present underneath the boot floor
-
No reported faults or electrical issues
Exterior
-
Candy White bodywork in good overall condition
-
Edition 30-specific BBS wheels, dark headlight surrounds, colour-coded rear valance and badging
-
The front end shows the usual smattering of stone chips
-
We note corrosion visible atop the front edges of the side skirts on both sides of the car
-
There are a number of small scuffs and scrapes on the door edges and rear bumper edges
-
On the driver’s door, there is a small crease/dent below the door pull handle
-
Looking closer, there are also a number of stone chips that have corroded on the front arches, a couple of minor scuffs on the mirror caps, some clouding to the headlights, and lacquer peel on the front red grille trim
-
All four of the BBS ‘Pescara’ wheels are in very good condition with no major kerb rash
-
Overall, a smart but useable example that shows some wear-and-tear commensurate with its age and mileage
Mechanical
-
2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder TFSI engine, producing 230bhp in the Edition 30
-
Six-speed manual transmission, sending power to the front wheels
-
The engine bay would benefit from a thorough detailing
-
The brakes have not been noted as worn on the recent MOT exam, but they are beginning to develop a lip on the rear
-
Notably, this example remains true to its factory specification and is free from any aftermarket modifications
-
Starts, runs and drives well, with no warning lights on the dashboard and no reported faults from the seller, who describes the car as driving in ‘A1’ condition
-
Main dealer servicing from 2015 to 2021 (when the car was stored, save for MOT runs)
Summary
This Golf GTI Edition 30 has a lot going for it: Rarity, a main-dealer history in the current long-term ownership and no aftermarket modifications to lead it astray from Volkswagen’s intended user experience.
Having been stored for a number of years, it would be wise to get this Golf serviced and perhaps change the belts just for peace-of-mind, but otherwise it looks to be free of any pressing needs; in other words, fill the tank up, point in your chosen direction and drive with vigour!
