Overview

Enjoying all of the benefits of a mid-mounted, naturally aspirated flat-six engine with Porsche’s typically excellent build quality and driving experience built-in, the first-generation Cayman was a hit from the get-go, and remains a firm enthusiast favourite to this day.

There’s also those looks - ageing like a fine wine is an over-used phrase these days, but the 987-generation Cayman (and Boxster, in all fairness) still look the part 20 years after launch. Yes, the first Caymans were released in 2006, no, we can’t believe it either.

A Cayman also makes a case for the practically-minded among us - with two genuinely useful luggage spaces and a well-proportioned cabin, the Cayman makes for the ideal weekend or short getaway driver. See, you can buy this Porsche with both your head AND your heart - winner winner!

This particular example is a pre-facelift, S model with the more powerful 3.4-litre engine. Driven and enjoyed as Porsche intended, regularly serviced and standard save for an upgraded valved exhaust, this is the Cayman that can be driven everyday without obsessing over the numbers ticking up on the odometer.

  • The door sill ‘Cayman S’ trims are typically scratched

Exterior

  • Black bodywork in generally good order

  • We note two areas of lacquer peel below the offside headlight on the front bumper

  • There is also a scuff noted on the lower edge of the front bumper, just to the nearside of centre

  • Elsewhere, there are a number of small scratches, blemishes and imperfections commensurate with the age and mileage of the vehicle

  • Both headlights are hazy/clouded and require polishing

  • The rear spoiler is in full working order

  • Both exhaust tips look to be in good shape with only some light dulling to note

  • The offside rear wheel is heavily kerbed, and the front nearside wheel shows some scuffs and larger chips but a fresh wheel is supplied with the car

Mechanical

  • 3,386cc naturally aspirated flat-six engine, producing 295bhp from factory

  • Six-speed manual gearbox

  • Rear-wheel drive

  • Advisory-free MOT until November 2026

  • We’re told that this Cayman S drives, performs and behaves exactly as expected, with no known faults or issues to address

Summary

All the flat-six goodness of a 911 but packed into a svelte two-seat frame that still looks fantastic to this day, yet will happily go un-noticed in daily traffic should you wish, there’s a lot to love about the first-generation Cayman; heck, we’d even say it’s verging on the territory of being a bona-fide modern design classic.

This particular example may have passed the milestone 100k miles on the odometer, but with evidence of regular scheduled servicing over the years, no mention of any issues and a clean MOT sheet to show, it makes a strong case as a performance daily driver for those that have a fun drive to work, or a weekend toy that can be used, enjoyed and driven without worry of piling on the miles or gaining a few new stone chips. Cars are made to be driven, after all!
