Overview

Are you the kind of person who really wants to get noticed? The sort that absolutely has to be the centre of attention all the time, and make sure everyone knows it? If so, then this is definitely not the car for you. It’s subtle, refined and beautifully crafted. The kind of machine that flies under the radar, confident in its abilities.

Still here? Well then, you’re our sort of petrolhead. Because while a luridly lime green hypercar is hilariously good fun for the occasional blast, for 99% of journeys, we just want something cosseting, a bit luxurious, practical, well specced, deceptively fast and a little understated. Which rather neatly describes the RS5 Sportback. Effectively a “4-door coupe” that sits, at least in terms of size, between the RS4 and RS6, it’s a deceptively ballistic vehicle that as easy and practical to live with as a Golf, comfortable enough to make motorway jaunts fly past and offers enough agility to make wiggly roads fun.

That 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 is a peach of an engine, developing 444bhp and a monstrous 442lb-ft from relatively low in the rev range. The result is incredible in-gear pace and a 0-62 time under 4 seconds. Yet it’s also a beautifully refined machine, ideal for gently cruising up and down the nation’s motorways in absolute comfort.

Being a Sport edition the specification of this example is spot-on too, offering a perfect blend of sporting intent with plenty of bells and whistles, all wrapped up in bulletproof Teutonic build quality. We love the styling too – for our money the RS5 is the best looking of the modern RS Audis, neatly treading the line between muscle car stance and discreet opulence to offer a genuinely attractive design inside and out.

With a solid service history, long MOT and low mileage, it’s the perfect car for anyone who wants a deeply satisfying, eminently capable yet stealthy daily driver. The pop-bang remap brigade will never understand, but the rest of us will be nodding in approval at a choice well made.

Summary

It’s not often you find a car that ticks quite as many boxes as this. It’s practical, happily swallowing four adults and their luggage. Naturally, as a modern Audi, it’s beautifully screwed together and has the kind of interior that you never want to leave.

Add to that a specification that is sporting and purposeful yet never showy or gauche, as well as the performance to scare the living daylights out of most supercars, and you have something really quite special indeed. Make no mistake about it, this is a deeply lovely car. One we’d be only too happy to park on our driveway…
