Overview

Having started out as a way for bootleggers to evade law enforcement during the prohibition era, the concept of ‘hot rodding’ classic American cars has come a long way since its genesis, transforming into a multi-million dollar industry that radiated from the United States outward, taking in all manner of cars and sub-genres. No matter how varied the concept of hot-rodding gets, however, it will always be intrinsically linked to Fords of the 1920s and 30s, such as the Model A, Model T and - as here - the Model B.

Specifically, what we have here is a 1932-registered Ford Model B 5-window Tudor sedan, which has been given the classic hot-rod makeover of upgraded mechanicals, a thumping 350ci V8 engine, and plenty of eye-catching aesthetic upgrades too (we hope you REALLY like the colour red, as you’ll be seeing a lot of it whilst sat in the car!)

In the care of the current owner for the last five years, this ‘B’ has sat for a period of time, and would likely benefit from a once-over before returning it to regular use. That having been said, it looks to be ship-shape to our eyes, and save for one or two blemishes, we have no doubt it’ll be stealing awards at shows wherever it goes.

Interior

  • Striking custom red velour and fabric interior in excellent condition

  • Custom overhead console and wooden trims

  • Some very light wear is visible to the front seat base fabric

  • There appears to be an area of threading on the leading edge of the rear bench seat base

  • The various metal trims are patinated in keeping with the vehicle’s character

  • Custom instrument panel with VDO monitoring gauges

  • Integrated USB charging sockets and upgraded modern audio with Bluetooth connectivity

  • There is some light wear noted on the door shut trims

  • No reported faults

Exterior

  • Classic Cherry Red paintwork in good order

  • We note some signs of ageing around panel edges, the door hinges and the front end

  • The chrome mirrors and trims are lightly dulled and patinated

  • There is a large blemish/area of damage on the offside front fender (wheel arch to us British folk)

  • The butterfly bonnet panels appear to have worn away the paintwork on the leading edge of the aft bonnet panel, most notably on the offside

  • The paintwork on the rear ‘tub’ of the vehicle looks slightly flat to our eye - perhaps a cut and polish is required?

  • All four wheels look to be in great shape, though the front two tyres would appear to need inflating further

  • Underneath, everything looks to be in great order, with no signs of any issues and no reported problems from the seller

  • Overall, a head-turning ‘hot rod’ that is show-ready as it sits, but still holds potential for the next owner to fettle and improve as they see fit

Mechanical

  • 350ci (5.7-litre) naturally aspirated Chevrolet V8 engine

  • 2-speed automatic gearbox

  • Rear-wheel drive

  • Cruise control has been retrofitted

  • Switchable valved exhaust

  • Disc brake conversion

  • Electric cooling fan

  • Reported to be in good mechanical health, with the only note from the seller being that a new battery is needed due to having been laid-up for a period of time

Summary

Instantly recognisable as a ‘hot rod’ Ford but without having been taken too far to the point of impracticality, this is a classic example of the more restrained side of hot-rodding - the requisite V8 soundtrack is present, a few upgrades have been carried out, and a wild interior installed - but this ‘B’ remains usable without requiring a trailer to go to-and-from shows, and if it should take your fancy, it could be used as a special events or high-days and holidays car for all the family to enjoy…
