Overview

Ever since the Z1 arrived way back in 1989 BMW's roster of sporty roadsters has continued to excite. From the subsequent Z3 to the more modern and latest Z4 variants, not to mention the sublime M Coupe and M Roadster incarnations, a convertible two-seater BMW sports car has abiding appeal and the second generation Z4 is no exception.

The all-female designed E89, to give it its correct internal designation, debuted in 2009 and remained in production for seven years. The first of BMW's Z cars to feature a retractable hard top, the E89 was a much more technologically advanced car than its predecessor. 

Available with a choice of engines (from a 2.0-litre four cylinder to a 3.0-litre twin turbo inline six) and four different gearboxes the Z4 also featured a host of trick tech, including driving mode selector, adjustable dampers and regenerative braking, amongst others. Not only was it well-engineered and suitably speedy but it also looked good and handled well, further evolving the initial concept set out by the aforementioned Z1.

Today, the second-gen Z4 remains an excellent used buy and one could do a lot worse than this particular late model, post-facelift 2016 sDrive35is example. Complete with fully stamped service book and a long, advisory-free MOT the car's mechanical faculties are surely without question having been clearly well maintained throughout its life. 

Presenting in a menacing shade of black with matching folding hard top, the exterior bodywork is in great shape overall and the car has covered just over 55K miles. Being the sDrive35is this top of the range Z4 comes with the revered 3.0-litre twin turbo six-cylinder N54 engine producing 335bhp that's mated to a seven-speed Getrag dual-clutch automatic gearbox. With brighter weather on the horizon, it would be a great time to treat yourself.

Summary

Taking the two-door sporty coupe concept and sprinting with it, the second generation BMW Z4 remains an incredibly accomplished beast. Beautifully designed and packed with technology it still manages to be an inherently engaging machine to pilot, especially when pushing on and with its factory retractable hard top, it brings the best of both roadster and coupe to the fore. This car, with its impressive service history, low miles and excellent overall condition makes for an admirable representation of the marque.
