Overview

AMG sports saloons have a knack of sneaking under the radar, and the feistiest version of the Mercedes W212 E-Class does a great job of it, providing you don’t fire it up in public.

For while the smart and sleek bodywork may look little different from a standard E-Class saloon (the different front and rear tyres sizes, quad tailpipes and diamond-cut alloys being the only real giveaways) as soon as you turn the ignition it makes its intentions quite clear. The thumping 6.2-litre V8 snarls into life, with those AMG exhausts practically barking with enthusiasm.

When it made its debut in 2009, the E63 AMG was a sensation, developing 518bhp and 465lb ft of torque, which was an impressive 18bhp more than the contemporary BMW M5. It meant it could hit 62mph from rest in just 4.5 seconds, the power fed to the rear wheels via a seven-speed ‘Speedshift’ version of the company’s GTRONIC transmission. The top speed was restricted to 155mph, but this one has the optional Driver’s Package fitted, meaning it has a speed delimiter and will go considerably faster, although a top speed was never made official.

Accompanying its vigorous acceleration was a soundtrack to die for, yet if you needed it to act like a docile executive saloon, then a light touch on the throttle made it quite usable round town, too - at least if you could cope with an average of 22mpg.

Open it up properly, though, and that’s where the AMG came to life - riding on electronically adaptable suspension with a track widened by 56mm over the standard car, more negative camber and an AMG-specific multilink back end.

This one is one of the first E63 W212s sold in the UK, registered in October 2009, just a month after British sales began. It was specified with over £12,000 of optional equipment when new, too, and has been comprehensively maintained by Mercedes main dealers until 2017, and then by independent marque specialists since.

It’s an incredible machine – its thumping power and understated presence making it the ultimate Q-Car, as well as a sensational thing to drive. If you want to sample one of the best executive expresses of its era, you’ve found it.

History and documentation

  • UK registration document in the name of the vendor

  • First registered 26 October 2009 and supplied new by Mercedes-Benz of Perth

  • MOT until 5 November 2026

  • Original handbook and book pack

  • Two keys

  • Service history held digitally, with seven main dealer services between 2010 and 2017, and invoices for services by other garages every year since other than 2020 and 2021, due to Covid-19 (though it was put through the MOT test in each of these years)

  • The folder also contains a printout of the Mercedes EVA Vehicle Information (Damage) Record. This indicated replacement automatic transmission control unit, and radar sensors control unit, and some work on the door mirrors

  • The most significant repair was a warranty claim in July 2014 relating to a broken exhaust valve spring. The labour codes from the EVA database, and parts used, suggest an engine strip down was performed with both cylinder heads taken off, and possibly one replaced, to effect a repair

  • Some of the invoices refer to a private plate which we can confirm was previously on the car
  • London ULEZ compliant

Interior

  • Alpaca grey leather in excellent condition.

  • There is no obvious wear to the seats, aside from some slight wear to the driver's seat from entry and exit

  • Very slight wear to the steering wheel

  • AMG floor mats are in good condition, but for the drivers mat which shows some wear

  • Everything works, except the rear window demist, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

  • The vendor reports that the alarm system was recently causing the indicators to flash for no reason after locking, though the alarm did not sound. That has now stopped and could be that the alarm sounder back-up battery has died. The car still locks normally

Summary

Stealth, quality and driver engagement are the absolute hallmarks of AMG, and no car defines it better than the E63 AMG. With the AMG Driver’s Package brake upgrades and speed delimiter, this is an astonishing Q Car and one that you’ll never tire of driving, while the below-the-radar looks means it’s unlikely to harbour the wrong kind of attention.

It’s a deeply appealing example of a breed of car that is sadly disappearing as environmental legislation wipes out big, burbling V8s. Here, we celebrate them - and this one is an absolute gem.
