Overview

When Evo, famous for finding the smallest chinks and weaknesses in any vehicle’s armour,  describes a car as having the “sweetest chassis of any car in this class” (October 2021, Evo Online), you know it’s something special. And when you consider that, in period, the 570S was up against the R8, Huracan, 911 Turbo S and Vantage, you start to understand what high praise that is. This is even more incredible when you consider that the 570S was the start of the ‘Sports Series’, McLaren’s “entry level” car. Which is a bit like saying “this nuclear bomb is quite gentle actually”, but we’ll let the understatement slide.

Of course, McLaren are famous for designing and building sportscars, supercars and hypercars that drive incredibly well. But the marvellous trick that the 570S plays is that it handles like a supercar, goes (very nearly) like a hypercar and rides better than most so-called “luxury” cars. Yet it costs sports car money. Top-end sports car money, but still sports car money.

In case you hadn’t noticed from the rather lovely photos, it’s also incredibly well proportioned and possessed of some truly fine lines. By today’s vast wings and manically slashed bodywork standards, you could almost call it subtle. Kind of. Either way, it’s a damn fine looking thing, and the two-tone blue and grey of this example highlights the beautiful bodywork incredibly well, without looking brash or too poser-ish. Well, there’s some poser-ish-ness to it, obviously. It’s a supercar, after all. But this is a McLaren, which means it’s the warm, friendly, acceptable face of supercar ownership.

This particular example appears to have led the perfect life for a performance car too - driven regularly, yet clearly very well cared for and meticulously maintained. From the supple leather to the gossamer smooth paintwork, it’s in great condition inside and out. The deep gloss and immaculate shine of the paint certainly belies the car’s 31,582 miles. You’d easily believe it’s done half that. You have to give McLaren their due, they really do know how to build a fast, pretty car that ages brilliantly.

Offering a 0-62mph charge that nips at the heels of 3 seconds and a top speed that rampages through the 200mph barrier, make no mistake about it, this is a very, very potent machine. That 3.8-litre V8 is a twin-turbocharged masterpiece and, in combination with the chassis’ unearthly ability to go around corners at quite unfathomable speeds, makes the 570S a true event every time you fire it into life.

If you’re in the market for a proper driver’s supercar, then we don’t think you can do much better than this. It may not be the obvious choice, but then that’s kind of the point, isn’t it?

Summary

This is the kind of car that makes you ask yourself “why didn’t I think of that?” You just know that if you buy one of the more obvious contenders, one day at an event or meet, a 570S will pull up next to you and your life will be a swirling vortex of regret and what-ifs.

When it comes to supercars, condition and spec are everything. And, perhaps contrary to popular belief, you don’t want a trailer queen. No, you want a car that’s been well-specified from new, used regularly and sympathetically, and that has a few miles under its belt. One that’s been serviced and maintained properly without skimping. In short, you want something exactly like the bewitchingly blue gem you see here.

Beautiful, staggeringly capable, devastatingly fast and built to last, there’s much to admire here. If you can put this on your driveway, you really should.
