Overview
In the early 1990s, Porsche’s engineers embarked on their single most important project in years. The brief of Project 986 was to emulate the appeal of the classic 911 sports car in a package that could be sold for less than half the price. To create a ‘Baby 911’ for the mass sports car market. It would become the car that saved Porsche and returned the brand to profitability.
The Boxster debuted in 1996 and was a massive, instant hit, selling in volumes that Porsche had never seen before. In 2004, the 986 begat the 987 – essentially the same car, but with an improved engine range and a new body more in line with the rest of the Porsche model range, with neater oval headlamps replacing the original ‘fried egg’ lamps, and a vastly modernised cabin incorporating the brand’s new PCIM infotainment system.
Today, just as when it was new, the 987 is a hugely desirable sports car - a modern classic with one of the finest names in automotive history and handling and performance to match. It’s a hugely affordable sports car, with a name steeped in heritage, and with a driving experience that is so pure, rewarding and fun that it’s hard to believe what terrific value they are.
This one’s as good as standard 987 gets. It’s a 987.2, introduced in 2009, and with a new 2.9-litre MA1 engine - if you know your Porsches, then you’ll know that means there are no intermediate shaft bearing issues to worry about. It’s a well-equipped example, with a powered roof, full DCIM and sat nav and heated leather.
The current owner has had the car for 11 years and absolutely adores it, having used it as her main car during that time. But an imminent house move and the need for something more practical means she’s reluctantly letting the car go. Both she and the previous owner had the car maintained by a well-respected Porsche specialist and it has wanted for nothing, being regularly serviced during its entire life. Prior to that, it has a main dealer history until 2012 and was looked after by a marque specialist for the next two years.
It’s a lovely example in classic Guards Red, well-presented and in superb overall condition.

Summary
We can’t really think of any other car that offers as much fun, comfort or prestige for the pound as the original Boxster, and as the 987.2 – essentially the final revision of the seminal baby Porsche – it’s as developed as the model ever got. What that means is you have a car that’s stunning to look at, great to drive, yet entirely capable of being used every day without the need for exorbitant maintenance costs or fears about its day-to-day reliability. Porsche performance doesn’t get any more usable or affordable.
This one is an absolute gem. It’s no low-mileage garage queen, but what it is, is a car that has been loved and cherished by a long-term owner, dutifully maintained and will be hugely missed. We’d get your bid in quickly, before they change their mind. We don’t think you’ll regret it, as this is a fine example of the breed.
