  • The car the BRZ was always meant to be?

Overview

Whilst the Toyota-badged stablemate the GT86 might be the better-known and more common example of the duo, the Subaru BRZ is arguably the more important, as it was Subaru who built and supplied the FA20 engines, so without the BRZ, we’d have no GT86. That rarity factor is also an evergreen appeal to enthusiasts, who love nothing more than being able to one-up their friends at a game of pub Top Trumps (other card games are available).

With the much-loved genre of lightweight, compact, RWD manual sports cars edging ever-closer to extinction (with a few notable exceptions, largely thanks to our friends in Japan), cars such as the BRZ are already feeling like a rare beast, and whilst they aren’t quite sitting in the hallowed ‘modern classic’ bracket yet, they have a strong enthusiast following and a loyal aftermarket knowledge base, which makes them great for both hands-on and chequebook mechanic owners all the same.

This BRZ, on the surface, looks to be a fantastic example with some tasteful Speedline Corse wheels and a subtle spoiler, but it is, in fact, a great example of less-is-more modification, until you open the bonnet…

Under the bonnet, the FA20 remains, but it has been substantially upgraded thanks to a ‘Stage 2’ Cosworth Supercharger kit, which was fitted by the supplying dealer when new. Now, with 280bhp on tap, this BRZ’s driving experience has been transformed, along with addressing the criticism of the FA20’s lack of torque when new. In short, this could well be the car that the BRZ should have been all along… and here’s your chance to own it.

  • An extra harness has been fitted to the driver’s seat for track use, but the original belt is retained for day-to-day driving

  • Racecar go brr! Switch panel with toggles for maps and driver aids

  • The vendor tells us that centre console box lid has a broken hinge but it is easy to fix
  • Both front seats are in great shape, with only some light creasing and abrasions noted on the outer driver’s seat bolster

  • In the rear, the bucket-style +2 seats look to be almost unused

  • The boot liner has protected the carpet in the luggage area, and as such it looks virtually immaculate

  • Even the high-traffic areas such as the steering wheel, door cards and shifter are in excellent shape, with virtually no discernible signs of wear

  • No reported faults or issues

  • There is a touched-in chip on the leading edge of the roof, which the seller tells us was correctly treated before painting

  • There is an indentation above the driver’s door

  • Cosworth rear badge alludes to what is hidden under the bonnet

  • The Speedline Corse 2120 wheels are freshly refurbished in Anthracite, and present fantastically

  • The seller points out that two of the tyres are due replacement (though he has spares) and two are circa 1 year old

  • Included in the sale is the original set of OEM wheels, which are also in excellent condition

  • The underside is said to be in great condition, thanks to fastidious ownership, lack of use on salted roads, and regular Lanoguard treatments

Mechanical

  • 2.0-litre FA20 engine, which from factory is naturally aspirated and produces 200bhp and 151lb-ft of torque, though this has been extensively improved upon for this BRZ

  • Supercharger conversion boosts power output to 280bhp and 230lb-ft of torque

  • Six-speed manual gearbox

  • As you may expect by this point in the listing, the engine bay is as immaculately-kept as the rest of the car, and presents fantastically

  • Milltek Sport primary cat-back resonated exhaust system (noted to be the quietest available free-flowing Milltek exhaust)

  • Fensport mapped in Oct 2023 @ 28,771 miles

  • Beatrush master cylinder brace

  • DBA T3 brake discs

  • Porsche front brake ducting

  • Goodridge braided brake hoses

  • Cosworth Streetmeister CS-PRO brake pads

  • Cosworth engine oil sump baffle

  • Killer B engine oil pickup pipe

  • GKTech anti-starvation fuel flap

  • Whiteline rear differential bush inserts

  • Whiteline gearbox bush insert

  • GR86 15mm rear anti-roll bar

  • Noted by the seller to average 32mpg, with potential for 40mpg on a run

  • The current owner has stuck to a self-imposed 2,500 mile oil change interval, with used oil analysed by Millers Oils and printouts to substantiate

  • We’re told that this BRZ has plenty of in-gear ‘pick up and go’, drives fantastically with no rattles or untoward noises, tracks straight-and-true and has ‘razor sharp’ steering

  • The supercharger whine is noted to be on the less intrusive side, great for day-to-day use

  • No faults found during the current owner’s time with the car (likely helped by his fastidious ownership)

  • The only small note from the seller is that the gearshift when cold can be notchy, meaning the current owner uses double de-clutching until the gearbox is up to temperature

  • Subtle pops and burbles from the exhaust on overrun

  • The seller notes that based on the 2,500 mile interval the oil change is due soon, the diff/gearbox oil is due to be changed in July (2-year interval) and the brake / clutch fluid is clean with no obvious contamination

  • We’re told that the brake pads are all less than 25% worn

Summary

Fastidiously maintained, immaculately kept and with a largely-hidden party trick under the bonnet, this BRZ is a textbook example on how to improve upon and modify a car without losing its original ethos or deviating from the original aesthetics, save for a few very subtle external modifications such as the Speedline wheels.

There’s a saying that you buy cars based on their owners just as much as based on the condition of the vehicle itself, and judging by the vendor’s detail-oriented nature and the way he kept this BRZ, that box is well-and-truly ticked.

We can just hope the next custodian keeps this BRZ in such good condition!
