Overview

The Rover Mini Cooper returned in 1990 with a 1,275cc fuel-injected A-Series engine, eager throttle response and remarkably high grip from that famously compact footprint. It's a deeply satisfying thing to drive, and it remains so to this day. But here's what few people appreciate: Japan's passionate Mini community was instrumental in keeping the Cooper in production. By the early '90s, more than half of all Minis leaving Longbridge were heading East. In fact, Japanese demand didn't just sustain the production line, it's widely credited with convincing Rover to reintroduce the Cooper name in the first place.

Those Japanese-market cars weren't simply re-routed UK-spec Coopers, either. They were built at the same Longbridge factory but to a higher specification, with factory air conditioning, a driver's airbag, twin headlamps per side, improved sound insulation and enhanced interior trim. That air conditioning alone separates all the JDM Coopers from every UK-market example ever built.

This car is one such Japanese-specification car, finished in British Racing Green metallic with a contrasting white roof. The 1.3-litre fuel-injected A-Series sits transversely under the bonnet, and the fact that they managed to fit air con in there as well almost beggars belief. Inside, walnut veneer surrounds white-faced km/h gauges in chrome bezels, a Cooper-badged steering wheel faces the driver, leather seats bear embossed laurel wreaths, and the seller tells us that the air conditioning still blows cold. It's a cabin full of JDM-specific details you simply won't find in a UK-market Cooper: alloy pedal covers, a Mk IV Union Jack gear knob, a CD changer beneath the rear seats and an SRS airbag.

In current ownership since 2013 and imported to the UK in October 2015, it comes with a recent MOT, a brand new battery and the original tool kit. The vendor is transparent about cosmetic wear commensurate with the car’s age, but it’s still deeply desirable both as a classic Mini and a JDM curio. And with specialist and parts support virtually unrivalled by any other classic on the market, this is a Cooper its next owner can enjoy entirely on their own terms.

History and documentation

  • Manufactured in 1998

  • In current UK ownership since October 2015; the vendor reports owning the car for 13 years in total, which includes a period of ownership in Japan prior to UK import

  • The vendor tells us it was serviced in Tokyo between 2013 and 2015, then maintained by specialists in London and latterly closer to home

  • Odometer shows 78,442km which equates to 48,742 miles
  • MOT expires 20th January 2027

Interior

  • The cabin's trimmed in black leather with white piping, featuring a Cooper-badged three-spoke steering wheel, walnut veneer dashboard and white-faced gauges in chrome-ringed bezels

  • Speedometer calibrated in km/h and an SRS airbag warning light on the instrument surround confirm the car's Japanese-market origins

  • Japanese-specification air conditioning controls labelled "Air Conditioner" with dedicated Temp and Blower dials sit in the centre stack; the vendor tells us the system still blows cold

  • JVC head unit with CD changer control is fitted; the CD changer itself is mounted beneath the rear seat bench

  • Wooden gear knob bearing a Mk IV Union Jack badge tops the centrally mounted shifter; alloy pedal covers add a sporty flourish to the footwell

  • Embossed Mini Cooper laurel wreath crests on the seat backrests — a charming JDM-specific detail

  • Driver's seat shows moderate creasing and surface wear on the base cushion and lower bolster; the passenger seat presents with lighter creasing

  • Walnut veneer across the dashboard, door cappings and door pulls shows sun damage with fading, discolouration and lacquer deterioration

  • Door cards are cleanly fitted with deep pockets and chrome manual window winders; no apparent sagging or detachment

  • Black carpeting in both footwells is clean and intact with rubber heel pads fitted; headlining is light-coloured fabric, clean and free of sagging

  • Rocker switches along the lower dashboard rail for headlights, hazards and ancillary functions all appear present and intact

  • Rear bench upholstered in matching leather with white piping; no visible tears or splits

  • Boot houses a full-size spare on a steel rim, the original tool kit and a brand new battery

  • An honest, characterful cabin with JDM-specification details rarely seen in the UK

Exterior

  • Finished in British Racing Green metallic with a contrasting white roof

  • Twin round headlamps on each side mark this out as a JDM-specification car; chrome surrounds are bright and intact with clear, undamaged lenses

  • The vendor notes clear coat lifting on the front wing, visible in the photographs and consistent with the car's age; some minor surface rust is present beneath the front headlight surrounds

  • White roof shows mild oxidation and uneven fading; the transition to green bodywork at the window surrounds remains clean and well-defined

  • Bullet-style chrome wing mirrors are fitted to both front wings and present in good order

  • Mini Cooper laurel wreath decals on both rear quarters; a chrome Mini winged badge sits centrally on the bonnet

  • Panel gaps appear generally consistent and the body looks straight with no obvious signs of accident damage or filler

  • Stone chips and minor paint blemishes along lower wing edges and wheelarch lips, consistent with age

  • Minilite-style alloy wheels; light surface pitting and oxidation on the spokes

  • Yokohama Advan tyres fitted with adequate tread depth and even wear across all four corners

  • Rear bumper chrome retains good shape with only light surface marks

  • Tail light clusters complete with intact lenses; amber side repeaters present and uncracked

  • Underside shows surfaces consistent with age and use

  • Windscreen appears clear with no visible chips or cracks

  • An honest exterior wearing its years with charm

Mechanical

  • 1,275cc fuel-injected A-Series inline four-cylinder producing 63 bhp and 70 lb ft of torque

  • Four-speed manual gearbox driving the front wheels

  • 0-62mph in approximately 12 seconds; top speed of 92 mph

  • The vendor tells us the car starts on the button, drives well and sounds good

  • No known mechanical issues reported by the vendor

  • Brand new battery fitted

  • Engine bay presents as tidy and unmolested; air conditioning pipework routes across the bulkhead, confirming the Japanese-market specification

  • With a fresh MOT and new battery, this Cooper's ready for its next chapter

Summary

A Japanese-specification Mini Cooper in the classic BRG-and-white livery but subtly different, more richly equipped and with a story all its own. Built at Longbridge for the very market that kept the Cooper alive, it's back home and fitted with factory air conditioning, a driver's airbag, quad headlamps and JDM-specific interior trim that no UK buyer ever had the option to tick. That working air conditioning alone makes it more usable than the vast majority of classic Minis you'll find anywhere.

In current ownership since October 2013, with a recent MOT, a new battery and the original tool kit, it's an honest driver with a genuinely fascinating backstory, not a garage queen waiting for a dust cover. Parts and specialist support for the Mini remain virtually unrivalled, so whatever its next owner has in mind, the infrastructure's already there. This is a  Cooper that's crossed continents and is ready to keep going.
