Overview

By the time the second-generation Cayenne came along in 2010, the SUV was largely regarded as the car that saved Porsche – even if its arrival at the 2002 Paris Motor Show was met with some contention.

The decision to launch a Porsche SUV wasn’t universally popular – after all, purists of the marque were still struggling to come to terms with the idea of a water-cooled 911, which had only been around for five years at that point.

But the impact of the Cayenne was huge. It came hot-on-the-heels of the BMW X5, and between them the two companies created a whole new genre of car – one that had the presence and prowess of a Range Rover, but with dynamic qualities that were a breed apart. It didn’t matter that the Cayenne shared its undercarriage with the Volkswagen Touareg, for dynamically it was as sharp as a pin. More importantly, the Cayenne had its own engines, and that included a V8.

It was the part of the Cayenne that was most admired; initially offered as a 4.5-litre unit with or without a turbocharger, then as a 4.8 with a second turbo as an option. For the second generation, things were dialled up a further still.

By now, the Cayenne had overtaken the Boxster and Cayman combined to become the German brand’s best-seller – a position it held onto until supplanted by the smaller Macan, which proved just how strong the appetite for Porsche SUVs was. But that essential Porsche DNA was still there, and it remained a core reason for its success.

While Cayenne V1 may have been a toe-in-the-water, the second model was a major investment. It came on the new VW Group MLB platform (see also: VW Touareg and Audi Q7) and the performance models were the fruitiest yet, matched by pin-sharp handling and a sophisticated, well-made cabin. The Cayenne 958 was, make no mistake, a hugely desirable car. And it still is.

This one’s a particular gem, as it comes with the most sought-after powertrain and is also a facelifted 958.2 model, which means it gets smarter software, a posher interior and an eight-speed automatic transmission. It’s a launch-spec facelift car, first registered in November 2014, just after the 958.2 came out, and is in Turbo spec, which means that lusty 4.8-litre twin-turbo V8, 512bhp and 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds, matched by a chassis with dynamic qualities you’d normally never expect of an SUV. It’s an epic machine, and one which would have set its original owner back a six-figure sum.

Now, you could own this mightily impressive twin-turbo Cayenne for a fraction of that…

Summary

If you want a high-performance, high-quality and supremely well-equipped SUV bearing one of the finest names in the business, then here it is – a fabulous example of the Cayenne, and with an absolute beast of an engine.

With over 500bhp to play with and performance to rival a contemporary supercar, this is an astonishing piece of kit that was a hugely expensive car when new, and which still has remarkable presence today – but without such a huge investment. It’s an astonishing car, and one that will easily double up as a family wagon whilst still delivering thrills from behind the wheel.
