Overview

With so many different versions and special editions of the Lotus Exige released over its 21 year production run it can be difficult to know which one to go for. Granted, any variant of this venerable and iconic lightweight two-seater sports car is going to put a fire in your belly and a huge grin on your face but there are some pretty significant differences across the range, from bog standard first-gen examples to later, larger engined cars and proper track-focused weapons.

So which one do you welcome into the fold? Well, for many the third generation is the way to go. Packed with all the updates and refinements that a late-stage incarnation benefits from the Series 3 makes a lot of sense and when coupled with the Premium Pack, as is the case with this particular 2015 example, it sits in the sweet spot between a car that can very much hold its own at the track but also one that's perfectly happy and easy to live with on the regular.

Introduced in 2012 the Series 3 Exige came equipped with a 3.5-litre supercharged V6 producing 345bhp and despite being larger than its predecessors in order to accommodate the additional two cylinders (and therefore heavier) the car was still incredibly light, meaning 60mph could be dispatched in under four seconds. The Roadster arrived a year later and with the exception of the removable roof little was changed and performance was pretty much identical to the coupe.

The car we have available here is one such Roadster and benefits from the aforementioned Premium pack which means upgraded leather sports seats, as well as additional leather dotted about the cabin, plus a trinket tray with divider and mats making it a more comfortable place to be over a standard example. Looking every bit the quintessential sports car in its bright red colourway it comes to market in superb overall condition and complete with excellent main dealer service history. A low mileage S3 that has clearly been cherished it's reportedly running well with no mechanical issues, a claim evinced by its advisory-free MOT.

Summary

With a similar power to weight ratio as a comparative era Porsche 911 Turbo the electrifying performance of the Exige S3 remains a huge draw and although still bestowed with more grip than most mere mortals can exploit the Series 3 comes with the innate ability to be driven sedately too. Chuck in the Premium pack and it becomes even more of a usable proposition so if you're craving one of the best sports cars to ever come out of the Lotus factory, or any factory for that matter, then you should seriously consider this third-generation Exige S V6 Roadster.
