Overview

We've all heard the “Elise is go-kart” analogy before. The comparison has been made a thousand times but then if the shoe fits... The fact of the matter is the similarities are undeniable. Engine, chassis, wheels, adrenaline. It's a simple concept that has kept the Lotus Elise at the top of driver's cars lists and in paddocks at tracks around the word for decades and it's a setup that continues to excite, especially in today's dumbed down automotive landscape where excitement and passion no longer seem to be part of the design language of most modern cars.

Building upon the original Elise, the S2 looked a bit more purposeful and featured a better, more refined interior as well as new Bilstein suspension. The K-Series lump was still providing the forward motion but it was now controlled by Lotus' own electrical wizardry, bestowing the S2 with a 0-60mph time of just five-and-a-half seconds, despite its relatively meagre 120bhp. But the go-kart correlation rears its head again because the S2 weighs in at just 860kg, ensuring the handling is absolutely on point.

There were multiple subsequent versions but there's something so pure about the original S2 and this particular early production 2001 car looks to be a great, usable example. Sidestepping the habitual garishly bright colours of a lot of other examples it presents incredibly well in a much more subdued shade of dark grey, a colour that's perfectly complimented by a similarly tasteful black and grey interior. Complete with good history and an advisory-free MOT, this Lotus Elise S2 has clearly been well-maintained with its most recent major service having been completed just over 1,000 miles ago by marque specialists.

Summary

The Lotus Elise is a bona fide classic now and the unfiltered driving experience remains as exciting today as it did all those years ago. Whether hurtling along your favourite B-road or clipping apexes on a track day, there's little that can come close to the pure pleasure of piloting an Elise at full chat and we have no reason to think that this particular mechanically sound and recently fully serviced S2 would be any different.
