Overview

Mercedes-Benz describes the current AMG G 63 as “visually a power and motorised an elemental force, where off-road brilliance meets breathtaking on-road performance” and it's a narrative that can just as easily be applied to the original model that debuted back in 2012. Officially, an AMG version of the G-Class was offered as far back as the '90s but the G 63 variant wouldn't appear for almost another two decades. When it did, however, we were treated to an absolute powerhouse of a car that perfectly combined modern era tech and new features with the unmistakable boxy aesthetic and rugged appeal that has become a tradition of performance luxury vehicles within the legendary G-Series line-up.

Equipped with a whopping 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 delivering a crushing 563bhp and 561lb ft of torque, the original G63 certainly had the performance on tarmac and the off-road focus made it a versatile beast that excels in all environments. And yes, that rugged utilitarian design is still front and centre but there were enough enhancements, high quality materials and luxury touches to ensure it all still feels a bit special.

As a model that was continually tweaked throughout its six-year production run this late 2018 example represents the culmination of all of those updates and comes to market in superb overall condition. Looking about as mean as they come in its all black colour scheme the car has been meticulously maintained and possesses an impressive service and history record.  Fresh from recent servicing and maintenance works, as well as a recent, advisory-free MOT pass, the car reportedly wants for nothing and the vendor informs us that it starts and drives the same as the day it left the showroom. Given how tough they are, we can well believe it.

• Factory 20” wheels are in original condition and therefore have standard age-related pitting having never been refurbished, reconditioned or replaced but they do not appear to carry any kerb damage

• The Yokohama Advan Sport tyres were recently replaced 

• Vendor reports the spare wheel has never been used, nor has the cover ever been removed 

• Underneath looks to be in excellent condition with no evidence of any damage or repairs that we can see and was given a wash as part of the most recent service work

Mechanical

• The vendor informs us that everything has been maintained correctly and the car starts on the first turn of the ignition as expected but does take a few minutes to warm up since it has a dry sump

Summary

In the words of the vendor this Mercedes-AMG G 63 is loud, rude and unapologetic and should come with a label exclaiming “buyer beware, highly addictive!” and to be fair that's an accurate description for such a formidable machine.
