Overview
Until very recently, the only way to get a proper American muscle car in the UK was to go through the torturous and not for the faint-hearted import process. Thankfully, Chevrolet came to our rescue and started selling the Camaro through a limited number of dealers on these fair shores. Ford followed suit with the Mustang and all of a sudden we were able to enjoy the two most popular ‘pony cars’ ever made. And we do mean enjoy, because both are excellent and a very long way from their 60s origins.
For reasons we cannot fathom, the Camaro never quite enjoyed the same sales success as the Mustang. Which is odd because, in our opinion, it’s just as good. We think the looks are great, the whopping 6.2-litre V8 is just as strong and evocative, and the Camaro is equally enjoyable on twisty roads. It offers excellent, confidence-inspiring handling and huge amounts of grip from those fat 275-section rears, far more ‘sports car’ than traditional point-and-squirt muscle car. This is largely thanks to the adaptive dampers (Magnetic Ride Control) that come as standard in ‘SS’ models and offer a level of involvement and feedback not usually associated with pony cars.
The Camaro is certainly a rare sight on our roads too, so it’s perfect if you want something a bit different from the norm. And this particular example is a 2019-registered 2018MY ‘SS’ model, which offers two other distinct advantages. Firstly, as an ‘SS’ model, you get to enjoy the raw power and aural fury of 6.2-litres of Chevrolet’s finest naturally-aspirated V8. Which is, to put it mildly, quite a lot. A quite thunderous 455 horses and an equivalent number of torques, in point of fact. Secondly, the 2019MY Camaro has a revised front and rear which are best described as… er… divisive. This 2018MY is definitely prettier and better resolved, so it’s the one you want.
Add to that the fact that whoever originally specified this car ticked all manner of options boxes, including navigation, BOSE sound system and, best of all, Nightfall Grey Metallic paintwork over Kalahari (tan) leather. This pairing really shows the long, low, aggressive lines of the Camaro off to its best, that traditional long bonnet, cab-back, fat rear haunch styling has never looked better.
Oh yes, and the car comes with a long MOT and full service history, but has only covered 9,540 miles. Which means it’s basically just about run in. So you are, to all intents and purposes, getting a pretty much new Camaro in the best possible spec with the kind of V8 that gives ‘the fizz’. If that does nothing for you, then we can only suggest … a Prius? Or maybe a bicycle?

Summary
This may be stating the obvious, but we love this Camaro. Everything about it is nigh-on perfect: the condition, the history, the styling, the two fingers it sticks up at any talk of an electric powertrain. It’s old school muscle with modern dynamics and handling, which in our book is the perfect combination.
Loud, angry, brilliantly styled, highly specified and presented in exceptional condition with stupidly low mileage, there’s no reason we can think of not to recommend this lovely motor.
Unless you don’t like V8s. But you’re a PH’er, which means you're a person of immaculate automotive taste, so of course you like V8s. Time to get bidding, folks…
