Overview
When the ‘997’ generation of Porsche 911 made its debut at the Paris Motor Show in 2004, Porsche enthusiasts had grown accustomed to the concept of a water-cooled 911. The 996, which shared similar engineering, had been on the scene for seven years; the engine remained at the rear, and as long as the tail still wagged the dog, the purest character of the 911 was still firmly intact.
But what the 997 did do was return to classic design principles – the Boxster-inspired “fried egg” headlights of the 996 were swapped out for more traditional, oval units reminiscent of traditional 911s. The appearance was much more of a nod to the iconic 911 appearance, even though the mechanicals beneath remained largely unchanged.
Underneath, the 997 carried over much of the running gear from the previous 996, featuring an upgraded water-cooled Carrera engine – available as a 3.6-litre for the Carrera and a 3.8-litre for the Carrera S – and identical front and rear subframe setups. This was no bad thing, because the 996 always was, and still is, a corking car to drive.
Performance figures were much the same, but both engine variants generated extra torque in the 997. There were options for sequential PDK or manual transmissions, and buyers could choose between cabriolet, targa, or convertible layouts, the latter of which is what we have here.
The original owner of this car clearly had good taste. They opted for the PDK gearbox, stunning 19-inch 10-spoke alloys, and one of the most striking colours for the 997 – Meteor Grey. With its 3.8-litre Carrera 4S specification, you get all-wheel drive and 385bhp. Frankly, it’s tempting enough to want to keep it for ourselves, but we can’t, so here’s your opportunity…
It’s one you shouldn’t let slip by, as examples of this quality, smartness and with such high specification are genuinely rare.
It’s sold with a full service history and a recently passed MOT, for added peace of mind.

- Summary
- 997s won't stay affordable for long, as 911 prices always tend to rise when collectors take notice. It’s one of those that’s waiting in the wings alongside the 996, and now is very much the time to buy one before they really start to take off.
- This one is low-mileage, well-maintained, and comes with a very high specification, which gives it a huge amount of appeal.
