Overview

The NC-generation MX-5 remains one of those cars that simply gets the fundamentals right. Rear-wheel drive, a naturally aspirated engine that wants to be revved, a six-speed manual gearbox, and a kerbweight that starts with a one. It was always the sports car that made everyday driving feel like an event, and in Sport Tech trim with the 2.0-litre engine, limited-slip differential and leather seats, Mazda gave it the kit list to match the chassis.

This 2011 example adds two things that genuinely elevate the NC formula. The first is BBR's Super 200 conversion, which lifts the naturally aspirated 2.0-litre to a quoted 205 bhp and 167 lb ft of torque. The second is the Power Retractable Hard Top. Twelve seconds is all it takes, and the result is a car you'll genuinely use in January as happily as July.

Finished in blue metallic over black leather, it sits on unmarked alloys and wears BBR badges on the boot lid and both front wings. Underneath, the braking and chassis have both been upgraded by specialists, and BBR themselves fitted uprated rear springs. We think it's a car that's been improved with care rather than thrown together, and at 61,676 miles with underseal applied, there's plenty of life left in it.

The current keeper has owned the car since January 2022 and reports that it starts first time, handles brilliantly, and sounds every bit as good as you'd hope a BBR-converted MX-5 should. We think it's a very tempting proposition.

  • Aftermarket performance dampers fitted at the rear

  • Surface corrosion on rear subframe and suspension components, consistent with a 15-year-old UK car; superficial rather than structural

  • The vendor reports the car starts first time, brakes are very responsive, and handling is excellent

Summary

There's no shortage of NC MX-5s on the market, but finding one with BBR's Super 200 conversion, a hard top, upgraded brakes, and uprated anti-roll bars at this mileage is a rather different proposition. The PRHT transforms what's already one of the most rewarding driver's cars of its generation into something you'll reach for whatever the forecast says. With a documented upgrade history, underseal protection, and over four years of settled ownership, it's ready for its next adventure.
