Overview

The Mustang is a car with legacy, with bags of character and an iconography that few others can hold a candle to; this is the car that has adorned the walls of movie theatres, starred in films, featured on just about every young petrolhead’s wall full of posters… you get the idea. Mustang is a name that in itself conjures up thoughts of freedom, of the great American dream, of pointing your steed into the sunset… and then adds a thumping V8 soundtrack to boot. 

That latter point - a raucous soundtrack - features aplenty here in the Mustang Mach 1, thanks to its naturally-aspirated V8 engine, coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox for full driver engagement (a 10-speed auto was offered, but very few were ever specified). The Mach 1 was, at the time, the most powerful, most ‘hardcore’ Mustang ever officially sold in the UK, and was marketed as being far more driver-focused than its stablemates, thanks to upgraded subframes, a custom tune for the Magnaride dampers, numerous minor mechanical changes, and - most importantly of all - the utilisation of the 5.0-litre V8 found in the preceding ‘Bullitt’  special edition.

Think of it as everything that’s great about the Mustang, but turned up to 11. No, it still won’t corner like a Ferrari or be parked in front of the Hotel de Paris in Monaco like a McLaren, but that’s never been the raison d’etre of the Mustang - it’s all about fun, loud noises and smiles per gallon.

This particular Mach 1 has been in the care of our vendor from new, and has covered just 13,000 miles in this time. With a reportedly full service history carried out exclusively by the supplying dealer, a clean MoT until February 2027 and presenting very well throughout, this is a rare opportunity to obtain the limited-run Mach 1 in fine fettle.

Interior

• The leather steering wheel shows a few small scuffs, and the driver’s seat is lightly creased with age

• Looking closely, there are some blemishes on the outer dashboard trim (driver’s side, right of the headlight controls) and again on the dash top, between the centre and right-hand air vent

• The rear seats look to be virtually unused

• Some minor abrasions are visible on the lower plastic boot trims

• No reported faults or issues

Exterior

• Aptly-named ‘Fighter Jet Grey’ bodywork - launch specification

• Contrasting black / orange details

• Looking closely, the front end exhibits some stone chips, as we’d expect to see on a performance car of this age

• The ‘Mach 1’ graphics / stripe on the bonnet looks to be fading with age

• Looking closely, we can see some small blemishes on the wheels, but overall they present very well

• Both rear brake calipers are showing paint wear / damage

Summary

With the ever-present threat of forced electrification, constant reminders of our carbon footprints and the increasing march of automation within our driving experience, sometimes its good to go back to basics, stick two fingers up at those looking to push ‘progress’ and say **** it, time for a V8.

This 2023 Mustang Mach 1 does exactly that; no hybridisation here, a raucous soundtrack and three pedals. What more could you possibly want from a Mustang? 

With just one owner from new and circa 13,000 miles on the odometer, this Mach 1 is finished in the ever-desirable launch specification, and appears to want for nothing other than a tank of fuel and a new owner (and probably many, many more tanks of fuel thereafter..!)
