Overview

It's fair to say that Renault knows a thing or two when it comes to making hot hatchbacks and the Renault 5 Turbo remains one of the best to ever play the game but the French manufacturer really stepped it up with the Clio V6 in 2001. Reminiscent of the aforementioned Turbo, the Renault Sport Clio V6 was based off of the Clio V6 Trophy, a race car from Renault’s sporting facility in Dieppe and built by Tom Walkinshaw Racing. The results? Simply spectacular, and the Clio V6 remains a rare and wonderfully unhinged machine in the best possible way.

Eschewing the rear seats in favour of a 60-degree, 3.0-litre V6 engine delivering 227bhp to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox the Clio V6 is pure heaven from a mechanical perspective. Throw in a made-to-measure suspension setup and a much wider track and then cover it all in muscular bodywork and you have a recipe for success. The car did take a certain degree of skill and courage to pilot, qualities that nowadays have been made largely redundant by electronic driver aids, but get it right and not much else comes close.

This 2002 Phase 1 model, wholly original save for a Momo Race steering wheel, has been well-maintained and regularly serviced and comes to market in great condition throughout. Although the car has seen limited use in the past 12 months it does benefit from recent significant mechanical works to ensure it drives as well as it looks and it remains an inherently usable example.

Summary

To this day there's nothing quite like the Renault Sport Clio V6. Road cars this bonkers simply don't get made any more and that's a crying shame. Incredibly rare (a shade over 250 UK RHD examples were built), not only is this a seriously capable machine but it also represents a rather shrewd investment opportunity. A hot hatch with supercar ambitions the Clio V6 remains a highly engaging, head turning icon that will never not be fun to jump in and take for a spin and this particular example is definitely worthy of consideration.
