Overview

Few cars that are now knocking on the door of 12 years old could claim to look modern, and fewer still could claim to still look like a vision of the future over a decade from launch. The BMW i8 is one such vehicle that has made it into this miniscule section at the centre of this Venn diagram; still, in 2026, what you have here is a vehicle that wouldn’t look out-of-place in a sequel to the 2004 sci-fi film I, Robot which was set in 2035.

The i8 wasn’t just a break from tradition for the Bavarian motoring giants, it went and smashed the entire mould, broke the status quo, and set fire to the concept of homogenisation for the German automakers’ lineup. A hybridised 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine good for a shade over 350bhp (later raised to 369bhp from 2018 onwards), scissor doors, and those rear flying buttresses that look like a pair of angel wings on the i8’s shoulders.

Whilst it never quite had the soundtrack or the soul of its competition - such as the Porsche 911, particularly in 2+2 coupe form - the i8 had every prospect of success on paper, but despite this, it was never quite the sales success that BMW aimed for it to be, and as such, they remain somewhat of an enthusiasts’ dream - completely usable as an everyday prospect, full of modern conveniences (but without the overbearing safety systems mandated in recent years) and yet still show-stoppingly striking and a somewhat if-you-know, you-know sort of car.

This particular i8 is a 2019-registered Roadster - at the time one of the very few hybrids or EVs available with a convertible roof - and has covered only just over 18,000 miles from new, backed by an exclusively BMW main dealer service history; main dealer history is always a benefit, but especially so when you consider the complexity and rarity of the i8’s architecture and systems. 

Boasting a number of desirable options - including the all-important 20” wheels, which transform the exterior of the car - this i8 looks to be in fine fettle, and would make for a fantastic daily driver for those who like their cars a little left-field, or simply appreciate the aesthetics of the i8 Roadster.

History and documentation

• Registered 28 Jan 2019

• Specified with front and rear cameras, blue seatbelts, and a driver heads-up display

• Digital on-board service record with recorded services as follows: Feb 2019 @ 9 miles, Mar 2021 @ 3,233 miles, Apr 2023 @ 8,297 miles, May 2024 @ 11,853 miles, Jul 2026 @ 18,070 miles 

• Exclusively serviced by BMW main dealerships 

• The OBC shows that the micro filter and air-cleaner service elements are overdue

• The seller reports that the original book pack is present with the car, along with a number of invoices

• In addition to the above, the seller reports that the driver’s door mirror was previously damaged, and subsequently replaced by BMW Sytner; this was carried out in July 2026 and the receipt is on file

Interior

Exterior

• Refined Sophisto Grey Metallic bodywork with contrasting BMW Frozen Blue accents

• This i8 Roadster presents in very good condition overall 

• Looking closely, there a few very small stone chips visible on the front end, and swirl/scratch marks are visible in the paintwork in direct sunlight

• There is a small scuff on the underside of the offside edge of the front bumper, and a blemish on the lower nearside edge 

• Up above, the retractable fabric roof is in good shape, with no rips or damage, and only a few storage creases to note

• All four of the 20” wheels are in excellent condition with no obvious kerbing or damage

• Bridgestone Potenza tyres, date-coded 2018

• Overall, a very smart example of BMW’s seminal hybrid sports car, that would only be further enhanced by a paint correction to rectify the swirl marks in the paintwork.  

Mechanical

• Hybridised 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing a combined power output of 369bhp and 420 lb-ft of torque

• 0-60 is completed in 4.6 seconds, and top speed is limited to 155mph

• The battery, which powers the front wheels through BMW’s eDrive motor,  has a capacity of 11.6kWh from factory, allowing a quoted cruising range of 33 miles when new

• Six-speed automatic transmission

• Rear-wheel drive

Summary

Supercar looks that haven’t aged a day, BMW build quality and reliability, and MINI running costs - there’s very little to quibble about with the i8 from a practical standpoint (ok, if you need a 4-seat car, or at the minimum a 2+2, the Roadster isn’t for you) and with today’s cars becoming all the more cookie-cutter-esque, there has hardly been a better time to stand out from the crowd in a car such as the i8. 

This example benefits from a number of desirable optional extras from new, and with its low recorded mileage and full BMW main dealer history, this is a purchase that both the heart AND the head can be happy about, and how often do those opportunities come along?
