Overview

Few cars exemplify the principle of “this should not be this good” as well as the third generation Porsche Cayenne Turbo. A two-tonne sports SUV should not handle like a sports car, it should not offer ballistic pace married with the sort of comfort more usually associated with luxury saloons. And yet, this is precisely what the Cayenne Turbo offers.

The space and comfort on offer is something more usually offered by such full-size SUVs, and in terms of luxurious appointments, fabulous build quality and genuine practicality, there’s much to admire here. From the plush, beautifully finished seats to the excellent sound dampening, endless pockets, storage cubbies and material quality that would make Brunel jealous, it’s every inch the mile-crunching family limo.

One of the car’s most surprising features, however, is its pace. Make no mistake, Porsche built an absolute weapon here. It’s not just quick, it’s truly rapid. And we don’t mean “fast for an SUV” – it’ll slam through the 0-62mph run in about 4 seconds, which makes it sportscar fast, with in-gear thrust akin to lighting the blue touch paper on a Saturn V. This is perhaps unsurprising when you consider that Porsche have squeezed a twin-turbo V8 into the nose, delivering a quite bonkers 550bhp and 568lb-ft.

But there’s much more to discover. After you’ve dropped the kids off or finished with your work day, just show it some corners and its true party trick is revealed: this thing can handle, and handle well. For once the “handles like a five-seat sportscar” rhetoric isn’t just marketing bluster. The Cayenne Turbo has no right – no right at all – to drive as well as it does. We can only assume its makers have struck some kind of arcane deal with the laws of physics, as they apparently do not apply to Porsche’s punchiest SUV.

This is a great example too, with low mileage, a full Porsche service record and a very attractive specification. No car can genuinely claim to do everything perfectly, to pretend any could would be absurd. But the Cayenne Turbo comes as close as we’ve seen. It’s a staggering work of engineering brilliance, and we can’t think of a single reason why you wouldn’t want this one in your garage…

Summary
