Overview

We're sure you've heard of the phrase “if it ain't broke, don't fix it”. Well, in the case of the Elise it certainly rings true and while Lotus may not have had to fix its seminal two-seater sports car it most definitely improved upon it. Continuously developed, the Elise would morph into the Exige in 2001, originally as a coupe version using similar bodywork and engine configurations. The Exige would initially run alongside its older brother but would also undergo multiple tweaks, updates and improvements over the years, culminating in the Series 3 in 2012. 

Complete with all of the refinements that Lotus bestowed upon the Exige in the course of its life, the S3 is blessed with a 3.5-litre supercharged V6 producing 345bhp and despite being larger than earlier incarnations (those two extra cylinders require a bit more room) it's still an incredibly light and chuckable machine that's capable of a sub-four second 0-60mph time. The Roadster arrived a year later and with the exception of the removable roof little was changed and performance remains similar to the coupe. 

And that's exactly what we have here with this 2013 Lotus Exige S V6 Roadster. In excellent overall condition and benefiting from the Premium Pack which adds enhanced leather trim, improved seating, extra cabin comfort and some handy storage making the car easier to live with day to day without compromising its inherent drive-ability, it's a great example of the marque. Featured as our weapon of choice for our review way back in 2013 we concluded that the Roadster was fast, fun and brilliant to drive on road and track, offering the full sports car experience in a truly attractive package that adds a new dimension and a whole heap of extra appeal to the Exige. And we stand by that statement.

Complete with excellent service history, as well as some recent maintenance works, this Lotus Exige S V6 Roadster ticks a lot of boxes and would make for an excellent fast road or track day toy with the added bonus of being really rather usable as a more frequent flyer.

• Dark blue paintwork retains a healthy shine

• No areas of repaired damage but the vendor reports two small areas of damage to the paintwork

•  PPF fitted behind the rear arches

• Some usual stone chips consistent with age and mileage

• All glasswork looks good but the windscreen does have some repaired chips

• Black fabric hood looks to be in fine fettle and fits well

• The 18” alloy wheels are in excellent condition overall with just one small scratch on the nearside front to note

• Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tyres all round which have covered less than 4,000 miles as reported by the vendor   

• The aluminium chassis and underside of the car look good with the vendor informing us that there were no concerns from the mechanic when working on the vehicle

• The vendor informs us that the car drives beautifully and sounds great, the steering is a particular highlight – the antithesis to numb modern steering, the lack of mass makes the car come alive and the engine and brakes are strong

Summary

The Lotus Exige S V6 Roadster is blessed with a rare ability to not only be absolutely devastating on track but also exist as a rather lovely convertible sports car that can very much be enjoyed sedately sans roof should you wish, especially here with the added interior comforts that the Premium Pack affords. Bolstered by an excellent service history this particular example doesn't appear to want for anything except a new, loving owner who will continue to enjoy its particularly venerable virtues.
