Overview

Ubiquitous as the van of choice across the pond, the Ford Econoline – much like the Transit in the UK – remains one of the best-selling van lines in history. A prevalent sight on American roads since its inception way back in the 1960s the Econoline, despite not being so commonplace here in England, is instantly recognisable to a lot of people, including us Brits, mainly due to its pervasiveness in popular culture, a position it enjoys due in no small part to the sheer amount of movies and TV shows the thing has appeared in.

From starring roles to minor bit parts the Ford Econoline's omnipresence on the Silver Screen has it thoroughly imprinted into the hearts and minds of generations. Combine that with the vehicle's inherent practicality and robust reputation and you have a recipe for success. It remains a sought-after machine for many people, whether it be for a commercial enterprise, customisation or simply cool kudos points and this particular 1997 Ford Econoline E-150 is no different.

A fourth and final generation example, this van's high-profile Hollywood credentials are plain to see and it features heavily in a prominent role in one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. The vehicle of choice of one of the main protagonists (whose identity you can no doubt guess) the van has been heavily modified from its original spec in order to be used “in character” in the film.

The full list of modifications can be found below but mechanically speaking the vendor reports that the vehicle has been professionally prepared in order to perform flawlessly on camera and is a lovely example of a classic Ford Econoline. Fitted with a 4.2-litre Essex V6 dual-fuel gasoline and LPG engine the van starts and runs well – as evidenced in the attached video – and would make for an excellent show piece that could also realistically be used on the regular.
