Overview

Alpine’s parent company, Renault, has been making its fair share of headlines in recent times by reviving names from its past, with the R5 and R4 both making a comeback and even an Estafette van on the horizon.

But the car that started the retro-revival? If you speak to any member of Renault’s senior design team – and we have – then they’ll tell you it’s this. A toe-in-the-water, low-volume model whose purpose was to reinvigorate the Alpine name, ahead of a return to F1 racing and a full expansion of Le Régie’s high-performance sub-brand.

That was almost a decade ago now, hard as that is to believe. The modern Alpine A110 was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2017, bringing one of France’s most evocative sports-car names back into production after a long absence. True to the spirit of the original 1960s and 1970s Berlinette, it was designed around lightness rather than outright power, with an aluminium structure, rear-mid-mounted 1.8-litre turbocharged engine, rear-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. 

Early Première Edition cars were followed by the regular Pure and Légende models, with UK deliveries beginning in 2018.

From there, Alpine steadily developed the car without losing sight of its delicate, driver-focused character. The sharper A110 S arrived in 2019 with more power and a firmer chassis, while subsequent additions included the track-biased A110 R and A110 R Turini. 

This one is a 2019 Pure – but that doesn’t mean it’s basic or any less fun to drive. With 252bhp and wonderful agility, every A110 is a barrel-load of fun. It also has a few extras including the sought-after aluminium passenger footplate, Focal audio system, interior stowage pack, blue alpine badges and stitching and driver’s footrest.

In recent times, Alpine has been navigating an electric future, but the brand’s planned US market entry has reopened the door for a potential combustion-powered successor. With Alpine’s CEO confirming that the A110's APP platform could be modified to accommodate a petrol engine—driven largely by the slower adoption of EVs in North America—the prospect of a petrol-powered A110 lineage continuing is once again a distinct possibility (though whether they make it to the UK is another matter). Either way, the current car ia already a modern classic: a compact, lightweight sports car that revived the Alpine badge with real conviction. While the A110’s combustion story may not be over just yet, this example is a perfect way to enjoy the current offering .

Summary

As modern sports cars become heavier, more complex and increasingly more electrified, the Alpine A110 stakes its case as a modern classic by being one of the last properly lightweight petrol-powered driver’s cars. The Pure is arguably the version that best captures that appeal: simple in intent, quick and built around balance, feel and low mass, much like a Lotus, but with a smidgen more in the way of refinement.
