Overview

The first-generation Impreza Turbo, the GC8, is the car that turned Subaru into a household name. Developed with Prodrive from the early 90s, it paired a compact saloon with a 2.0-litre turbocharged flat-four and symmetrical all-wheel drive. Cooling came via an air-to-air intercooler fed by that trademark scooped bonnet. Rally success and a starring role in the games of the era did the rest.

This 2000 facelift car is a genuinely cherished example finished in Deep Blue Mica. The vendor tells us the paint has been detailed to a swirl-free shine and ceramic coated. It shows a deep, even gloss across the photos. Indicated at roughly 19,250 miles, it has been dry-stored on a trickle charger and recently recommissioned, the vendor tells us. Rust is the classic Impreza's great enemy, so the comprehensively protected, clean underside on show in the photographs is a genuine draw.

On the move the recipe still delights. It's rapid by any measure, with a short, mechanical five-speed shift and strong brakes. The hallmark all-wheel-drive grip lets you lean on it in any weather.
