Overview

Subaru's first-generation Impreza arrived in Japan in 1992 as the GC saloon and GF wagon, with the WRX at the top of the range. The STi version followed in 1994. Prodrive had been involved since 1990, and the works team went on to take three consecutive WRC constructors' titles between 1995 and 1997. That's quite a CV for a family car with a bonnet scoop.

This one's the wagon, and that's a lovely way to have one. You get the turbocharged flat-four, the five-speed manual and four-wheel drive, plus a tailgate and a proper boot for the weekly shop. It's finished in Light Silver with the STi roof spoiler and tailgate wing, and the cabin keeps its STi bucket seats. Better still, the chassis has been properly sorted. Roger Clark Motorsport fitted and set up BC Racing coilovers in 2017, a year after an uprated Exedy clutch and lightweight flywheel went in.

Japanese registration papers show its first owner was Subaru Tecnica International itself, from 1995 to 1997, and the vendor tells us it was used as a development car.

What you're looking at is a usable, honest STi wagon with the right upgrades in the right places. It sits nicely on those gold wheels, it shows 74,723 indicated miles and it's ready to be driven, whether that's a B-road blast or a run to the tip.

  • Further invoices from Subaru 4 You and various parts suppliers dated between 2014 and 2019, plus the BC Racing coilover warranty card and instructions

  • Vendor reports the car had oil change and minor service including rear offside CV boot fix in Mar 2026

Interior

  • STi front bucket seats with red embroidered STi logos, grey Alcantara-style centre panels, dark cloth bolsters and red piping

  • Seat centre panels show flattening, pilling and discolouration from use

  • Driver's seat has a small hole on the outer bolster that's been neatly stitched

  • Rear bench complete with two headrests and belts, showing light wear only

  • Aftermarket Nardi three-spoke dished steering wheel on a boss kit (original steering wheel will also be supplied if wanting to put back to standard)

  • Black spherical gear knob with the original gaiter and five-speed shift pattern badge

  • Factory intercooler water spray switch on the dash, and the automatic climate control (including AC) panel is complete

  • Pioneer FH-X700BT Bluetooth and USB head unit

  • HKS turbo timer under the steering column, with some exposed wiring beneath that would benefit from tidying

  • Dash, vents and switchgear complete with no visible cracks, though vendor reports centre vent vanes slightly misaligned

  • Door cards complete with intact fabric inserts; light marks on the sill tread plates and lower dash trim

  • Boot carpet clean and complete, with light scuffs to the plastic side trims

  • Fire extinguisher mounted in the passenger footwell

  • Japanese inspection sticker on the windscreen and a 1995 Network Q RAC Rally sticker on the rear glass

Exterior

  • Even gaps across the majority of the car
  • Light Silver paint with the STi roof spoiler, tailgate wing, bonnet scoop and STi fog light covers

  • Front bumper has scattered stone chips across the lower lip (light surface marks) and a notable scuff on each lower outer corner

  • Offside front wing has a small pin dent on the upper wing

  • The vendor tells us the bonnet has some scuffs, slight scratches, marks and a few pin dents

  • Driver's door has peeling lacquer along the lower swage line (notable scuff) and a small chip (light surface mark)

  • Slight crease in passenger front and rear doors

  • Rear bumper top has a few small chips (light surface marks)

  • STi decal on the roof spoiler has lifting edges

  • Electronic folding side mirrors

  • Wiper arms show flaking paint and surface rust

  • Gold 10-spoke genuine OZ Prodrive P1 17-inch wheels, with some slight paint flaking on a few of the wheels

  • Alloys show age-related corrosion and slight lacquer peel / bubbling on inner alloy barrels (would benefit from a refurb)

  • Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres in 205/45 R17, which we're told were fitted at 67,646 miles

  • Red brake calipers, mudflaps, a front tow strap and tinted rear glass

  • Underside shows surface rust on the rear subframe, differential casing, anti-roll bar and exhaust pipework, so it's worth an inspection

Mechanical

  • 2.0-litre EJ20 turbocharged flat-four with a five-speed manual gearbox and four-wheel drive

  • Factory top-mount intercooler with water spray (reported by vendor as unknown if working), plus a genuine STi front strut brace

  • Roger Clark Motorsport downpipe and custom exhaust reportedly fitted by a previous owner, finished with a single polished tailpipe

  • We're told it sounds great without being excessively loud

  • The vendor tells us that sometimes the engine warning light comes on for around a minute after a cold start, then goes out

  • It reportedly doesn't return when started warm, and the vendor hasn't noticed any running issues

  • Diagnosing that warning light, an underbody corrosion treatment and a detail clean of the engine bay would make sensible next jobs

  • With the coilovers, clutch and cambelt done and a current MOT, it's ready to drive and enjoy as it stands

Summary

This is a first-generation five-door STi with factory STi kit, a well-chosen chassis package and gold Prodrive-branded wheels that suit it well. It's backed by a file of specialist invoices, and the cambelt was done at the last documented service. It's an honest, usable example that's ready to carry the shopping and enjoy the long way home.
