Overview

Porsche launched the 968 in August 1991, and it's the last of the front-engined, rear-drive transaxle cars descended from the 924 and 944. Under the bonnet sits a 3.0-litre four-cylinder with lighter pistons and con-rods and VarioCam variable valve timing, good for a healthy 237bhp. Pair that with a six-speed manual and you've got 0-62 mph in 6.5 seconds and 156 mph flat out.

Put the engine up front and the gearbox at the back and you get the 968's party piece: superb, forgiving handling balance. Just 12,776 were built over a three-year production life, so you won't trip over one in every supermarket car park on a Saturday. Values have climbed too, as tidy, cared-for cars have become the ones to have.

This 1993 Coupe is one of those tidy, cared-for cars, finished in a classy grey over matching Porsche-script cloth. The paint holds a deep gloss, throwing clear reflections across the bonnet, wings and doors, and it looks properly smart in the flesh. The paperwork backs it up, with the cambelt and balance shaft belt, a water pump and fuel line work done in recent months.

The vendor tells us it starts fine, drives really nicely and sounds great, which is exactly what you want from a B-road weapon. Settle into that low-slung seat, snick it into first and you'll soon see what all the fuss is about. Add the glossy paint and freshly fettled mechanicals and you've got a 968 that looks sharp and is ready to be enjoyed straight away.
