PORSCHE 968 CLUB SPORT
Why does a figure-skater spin faster when she pulls her arms in? (or he, of course, but I can only think of Robin Cousins.)
Why, in 1994, was the 968 Club Sport the best handling car Porsche had ever made?
Well, the answer is the same. It’s about moment of inertia and conservation of rotational momentum.
Or, to put it another way, things with all the weight concentrated in one place (a 911) spin quickly and are difficult to control. Things with an engine at the front and transmission in the back (a 968) rotate slowly and are easy to balance. Simples.
By lowering the car by 20 mm, tweaking the suspension and stripping off some of the 'luxury' elements of the 968 a credible 100 Kg weight-saving was achieved which allowed the CS to sprint to 60 mph in 6 seconds and then on to a top speed of 162 mph.
As soon as the press discovered what a brilliant drivers’ car it was, the credibility of the 968 Club Sport went through the roof. Even Walter Röhrl reckoned it was the best handling car that Porsche made. The Club Sport won numerous accolades including Performance Car magazine’s Car of the Year, and immediately became a classic.
This particular 968 Club Sport is a standard, original car. Supplied by HR Owen on 21 June 1994, it has covered 61,750 miles and has an excellent service history, including no fewer than 28 Porsche main-dealer / specialist stamps in the service book, and a comprehensive file of invoices and MOTs. A very thorough 48k mile service has just been completed, together with new belts, cam chains and any remedial work required. So it’s in superb mechanical condition and ready to use.
Finished in Solid Black with black cloth interior complemented with red 'Club Sport' side-panel script and silver 17" Cup alloy wheels with four new Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tyres. A major service has just been carried out.
The VIN confirms that this is a genuine 968 Club Sport and comes with a six-speed manual transmission, three-spoke steering-wheel, non-electric windows, a period correct Porsche CR 21 radio cassette, body-coloured spoiler, and manually adjusted seats.
It has a perfect, no-frills specification as befits this classic driver’s car:
C16 UK supplied
L741 Solid Black
346 Standard colour rims (silver)
381 Series seat, left
382 Series seat, right
418 Protective side mouldings
451 Prepared for radio for sport group
455 Wheel locks
534 Alarm system
650 Sunroof
As values of track-focused 911’s go through the roof, rising as fast as the cars hit the barriers on the Nordschleife, this usable, classic Porsche looks very good value.
