Here’s an admission: My favourite bit of Spa Francochamps isn’t on the circuit at all: It’s the La Source Hotel. But something always worries me when I’m there: All the Porsche GT3 RSs in the car park.
Who are the owners? Are they:
A) So good at driving that they never make a mistake;
B) So vain that they take their cars round slowly just so they can talk about taking Eau Rouge / Raidilllion flat;
C) So wealthy that crashing a £100k+ car is the equivalent of dropping their last Rolo between the seats; or
D) So mad that their idea of fun is risking all their hard-earned cash on a day out?
The depressing answer is, of course, most are C. The remainder think they are A but are actually D.
So, this begs another question: if you are none of the above, but a Porsche enthusiast who knows there is something very rewarding about pushing a rear wheel drive 911 at pace either on the road or track and hence wants the best dual-purpose car, what should you buy? Well, here it is:
This Porsche 996 C2 was first registered on 1st March 2004 and has covered 80,150 miles.
The previous owner, who understood why the GT3 is so popular amongst driving enthusiasts, applied some alternative thinking to create a bespoke Porsche that ticks all the boxes.
It went to Hartech, recognised to be the best in the business at 996/997 engine conversions, in July 2019 at 77,837 miles. It had a full engine conversion to 3.9 litre with Nikasil cylinders, new bespoke pistons, rings, timing chain set, crankshaft bearings, later intermediate shaft, cylinder head overall, new oil/air separator, water pump, plugs, coil packs, crank position sensor, etc etc. This was installed with a baffled sump, upgraded induction, Designtek exhaust manifolds, high-flow catalytic converters, sports rear silencer and a Gripper limited Slip differential.
In addition, to complement the extra power and torque, the car has Porsche 997.1 340mm front / 325mm rear two-piece brake disc upgrade, new brake lines, Brembo sport pads, uprated fluid, together with 996 Turbo PSS10 Bilstein suspension. The car has the optional 18" OEM wheels with Porsche-specific Pirelli P Zero tyres.
To complete the retro sport look he added a carbon fibre ducktail rear spoiler; and trimmed the steering wheel, gear gaiter and handbrake in Alcantara with yellow stich.
The car has an excellent history with thick file of Porsche main dealer / Porsche specialist invoices and MOTs. It hasn’t had an MOT advisory for ten years. It will come fully serviced, with new oil and filter and a new MOT, ready to enjoy. The L1 RPM personalised number plate is not included in the sale.
This bespoke Porsche, with its completely upgraded and renewed engine and chassis, drives immaculately on the road and will be entirely at home on a circuit. The torque from the 3.9 engine transforms the car. Easy to drive in any gear yet, it's willing to accelerate strongly from part throttle. The ride is firm with very little roll and yet the car remains compliant, secure and - compared to a GT3 RS - comfortable. Hence this is a viable alternative to a GT3 RS or CSR – at a fraction of the cost. You’ll love it.
