Introduction

Here at OCC we are very happy to have a long awaited model for sale at OCC, the Alpina B12 5.7. The E38’s have long been one of OCC’s favorite BMW models and in the last few years we have finally seen the demand and so the prices of these special cars rising. Well here we have the ultimate E38 incarnation, the very rare 1998 Alpina B12 5.7 E Kat No 130. This B12 is one of 9 RHD to come to the UK, they are rarely seen for sale, most remain in long term ownership. To give you some kind of idea of how exclusive and expensive these cars were when new, in 1998 you could almost buy 2 fully specified 740’s for the price of this car.

So what is the B12. Well Alpina took an already amazing BMW E38 750 V12 and went through the whole car, improving performance and adding extra touches of luxury and exclusivity wherever they could. Performance enhancements to the engine included enlarging capacity to 5.7 litres using lightweight pistons, improved cylinder heads, improved intake and exhausts etc. Elsewhere, improvements were made to the gearbox, adding ‘Switchtronic’ steering wheel button gear changes, suspension setup etc etc. Obviously along with the performance improvements, the bodywork and interior were given Alpina’s special attention, with lovely Alpina touches wherever you look. Then we have to mention the trademark, beautiful 20inch Alpina alloys.

How good does this car look, they have an amazing presence on the road…

OCC are selling on behalf of a double Alpina owner. Originally he had a B10 V8s Touring (another very special and very rare car), then he purchased this car from a long term Alpina enthusiast owner. The owner recently appeared with this car in BMW Club Straight Six (Dec 2020). The last 2 owners of this car have been the perfect custodians, always keeping on top of maintenance and servicing. This 1998 example has covered 163,000 Miles, with full service history including 20 service stamps. The car probably drives and performs better than cars with less than half this cars mileage. I have the pleasure of driving lots of well maintained cars, this drives as well as any of them. Starts and performs without fuss, no knocks, no bangs or unwanted noises. Everything feels reassuringly tight and responsive.

Bodywork / Interior / Wheels / Roof

Finished in Orient Blue Metallic, the paintwork and colour on this car are amazing. It comes with a deep all over shine, no noticable dings or dents. Look closely at the pictures and the video, this is a car ready to show or have safely tucked away for those weekend trips.

Inside we have a Black fully extended leather interior, which is again in amazing condition. Complete with Alpina touches, this is a very special and well appointed interior. The condition of the leather, which extends everywhere in this car is absolutely lovely, you can tell the quality of the leather by how its lasted and how good it still looks today.

The 20 Inch Alpina alloys are all in excellent, unmarked condition including the spare. All fitted with an excellent set of Michelin tyres.

Engine / Gearbox

The 5.7 V12 engine sounds and performs perfectly. During long testing, the car performed perfectly hot or cold, always sounding perfectly and running perfectly smoothly. The performance from this car is amazing, the V12 seemingly pulls from any speed and if you are not careful you are soon over the 100 mph before you can take a breath. If there is any car that will have you making any excuse for taking a long journey, this Alpina will.

Alpina made improvements to the gearbox, it certainly seems to have worked, this Alpina will happily kick down the gears when asked to, without any fuss but remains super smooth in normal use. Obviously you can use as an auto or change gear using the buttons on the steering wheel. Reassuringly, looking through the history, the gearbox was fully rebuilt recently.

History

This Alpina benefits from an excellent service history. We have details of previous owners, a folder of receipts and old MOT’s, a full stamped original service book all the manuals etc. No less than 20 service stamps, either by BMW main dealers, or by very well respected specialists. Its clearly been maintained correctly by people who can afford to look after their cars correctly.

It comes with a B12 plate and is MOT’d until August 2021.
