Unveiled as the L96 prototype at the 1995 Seoul motor show, the revised Elan featured different wheels and Kia badges on the nose as well as the steering wheel, but the biggest change was under the bonnet. Korean law prohibited Kia from simply rebadging somebody else’s car; the changes had to be more significant than that, to protect Korean jobs.

Undeterred, Kia pressed on with production, replacing 162bhp worth of turbo 1.6-litre engine for a 151bhp atmo 1.8-litre unit of its own. It changed the rear lights and replaced the orange GM dials with some white-on-black ones. It also raised the revolutionary suspension, mounted on ‘rafts’ to counteract torque steer, apparently to cope with poor road surfaces in the domestic market.

This particular example has been well cared for by its true petrolhead previous owner, and is presented in excellent working order, with all features operating as they should. Documents wise, the original Korean handbook is present, as is a good, yet partial maintenance history. Around the bodywork you may find the odd imperfection/blemish but it is totally comensurate of the age of the vehicle and really does present very well overall.
