Just 1515 were made for the entire world, with just the 100 bound for the UK even more special still. To pay homage to one of the greatest Mercedes-Benz works drivers, UK Silver Arrows were personally endorsed by Sir Stirling Moss, with a certificate of authenticity signed by the great man. Incidentally, this car is number 59 of 100. Loaded with extras and comfort options, this run-out SL is a sumptuous and rapid machine that has an extra dimension of motorsport heritage. The car's special edition status is reinforced not only by its Brilliant Silver Arrow Metallic shade (777), but also the reminders on both kick plates and the silhouette of Moss' 1955 racer on the centre console cubby. OPTIONAL EXTRAS Most R129s came well-equipped but this one's still impressive even by modern standards. There are heated electric seats up front with three memory settings, a glass hardtop roof with working blinds, xenon headlamps, a CD changer in the boot, along with an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, headlamp wash/wipe and a premium audio system. This cosseting SL500 might have the comfort options ticked, but it's also a lot more purposeful than the base machine upon which it's derived, having been fitted with the AMG styling package. This consists of a more sporting front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser, giving this Silver Arrow racing visual appeal akin to its podium-taking ancestors. CONDITION Having been cared for by just three former keepers - two of them long-term custodians - this limited-edition SL has survived its 22 years remarkably unaffected by the ravages of time and environment. The paintwork keeps its exceptional factory finish with barely a blemish. The engine bay presents very well with a dry engine block that's free from leaks, just visible under the vast plastic covers, themselves unmarked and glossy. The matching set of Continental Sport Contact 3 tyres are in great shape and are of 2015/'16 vintage. HISTORY This Silver Arrow spent some of its life in Northern Ireland, where sadly much of the early paperwork remains, however one helpful Irish owner has provided two-A4 sheets of hand-written history. Clearly the conscientious type, he's retained many of the following MoTs and service documents, so it's far from a total loss. Mainland UK owners have also kept hold of the paperwork as we have stamps in the service book charting visits from 2004 to the present. The most recent work saw TM Motors in Surrey carry out some diagnostic work on the central locking (now working) and to replace a leaking fuel pump, plus conduct a full service, including new wiper blades, in January 2023. We also carried out a four-wheel refurbishment recently, ensuring those rare diamond-cut rims continue to look their best.
