motodrome offer this incredible 1992 VW Golf GTi mark 2 16v 3dr, finished in Tornado Red with grey cloth sports trim.
This late-registered, low mileage GTi 16v has a wonderful story to tell.
The last, and only owner graduated from university aged 21 in 1992 and decided this was the car for a thrusting young executive. He was right, as I can attest. He bought it new from Karman, the then main dealers in Barnet, for £12376.00 on 17th March 1992, and has kept it garaged ever since.
Back in the dark days of the early 1990’s, hot hatches were very difficult, if not impossible, for young drivers to insure. So, aged 21, whilst it was invoiced to him, insurance regulations at the time meant it had to be registered to his mother, as he was too young to be insured as the main driver. However, his mother never drove it, and it remained his car.
He finally reached an age in 1996 whereupon the car could be registered to him, and he’s cared for it ever since. The V5 therefore shows one previous keeper, but it’s still a one owner car.
Other cars have come and gone from his garage over the intervening years, but the GTi has always remained with him, and used sparingly, and the low mileage of under 68000 is therefore warranted.
Apart from a more modern stereo, it remains to completely original specification, which is a rarity in itself these days. He tells us it’s never needed any major paintwork, or any welding, and looking at it closely we think this is correct.
One owner getting in and out of a car in his specific way over a 30 year period will inevitably result in the drivers seat outer cloth bolster being worn through, and this is the case here. Also, if you’re going to show the car, you’d probably want to detail the engine bay, as the owner wasn’t into that
Specification wise it’s standard late mk2 GTi 16v, so it has big bumpers, the correct BBS 15in alloys, power steering, electric front windows, manual sunroof, central locking, and trip computer. Apart from the stereo (no holes cut in the parcel shelf etc), the only mod we can find is an immobiliser.
History-wise we’ve got the lot, from day one, which obviously support the 68k warranted mileage, including:
• Original service book with 16 stamps in it up to 61998m
• Every MOT test certificate from it’s first in 1995
• A large file of supporting bills and invoices (including more recent servicing not in the book).
• Original purchase invoice and supporting documents.
Recent history highlights include
• New ignition module at 65536m
• New steering rack, distributor, rear discs and pads, and cambelt kit at 65371m
• New front brake calipers, discs and pads at 64721m
• New head gasket and cylinder head skim at 59613m
Last serviced (full) at 66792m in Feb 2023, including new plugs.
We have the original book pack and both sets of keys and fobs.
We’ll be supplying it with a new MOT on sale, and 6 months warranty.
On test it performed like it had just rolled out of the showroom, which is a testament to both VW’s build quality and the owner’s care. Most of these, if not restored, feel baggy, rattly, and blunt. Not this one.
A rare opportunity to acquire one of these iconic hot hatches, that hasn’t previously fallen into disrepair or the hands of boy racers, but has been carefully owned and cherished. We know it’s not cheap, but find another like it!
On our own website, you’ll find our usual two videos: a walkaround appraisal, and driving impressions, which form part of the description.
