Ferrari F40 - Cat, Non-Adjust - Classiche Certification [DK1948]

Ferrari's 201 mph F40 is the definitive supercar and has a formidable reputation alongside the 250 GTO as possibly the best road Ferrari built to date. With the F40, Pininfarina produced an era-defining creation, one that even today is instantly recognisable by old and young enthusiasts alike. F40's were closely derived from the experimental GTO Evoluzione and the road-going 288 GTO (that the F40 replaced). The design features a tubular steel chassis with bonded composite inserts, most notably around the sills and floor pan, The 2,936 cc motor produces approximately 500 bhp at 7,000 rpm with the help of two water-cooled IHI turbochargers running 1.1 bar of boost. At 1,202 kg, the F40 had, and still has, a phenomenal power-to-weight ratio. Shatteringly fast by any comparison (especially for 1988), the F40 can sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds and hit 201 mph flat out making it the first production car to surpass this mystical boundary.
This example was supplied new in February 1993 to Cees van der Velden, the former world champion powerboat racer inimitably nicknamed ‘the flying dutchman’. With such a late build date, this F40 is understood to be the 3rd from last production F40 built. Spending much of his time on water, it was used sparingly, returning to supplying dealership Kroymans Ferrari for major belt services, with all other work carried out by his powerboat team, Velden Racing.
After van der Velden’s passing, the F40 was sold to a close friend and proprietor of Holland’s second largest supermarket chain. A keen collector of vintage Formula 1 racecars as well as a frequent sponsor of motorsports, the F40 would continue to be used sparingly. The car would continue to visit Kroymans for servicing and was seen on several occasions at charity events in northern Holland.
In December 2011, this F40 was imported into the UK by Hexagon Classics, shortly after selling to Mr Willsone of Essex. The car received an inspection ahead of purchase at Maranello Ferrari in Egham having covered just 16,500 kms. It’s time in the UK has seen the car cover fewer than 700 kilometres in 12 years. Receiving near-annual services from the Ferrari main dealer network, this example sports five services with Maranello Egham and two further services from Graypaul & JCT600.
Upon arrival at DK Engineering in 2024, this example was fully inspected by our workshops. As part of the sale it will be fitted with new fuel tanks and a major belt service will also be carried out. This fabulous F40 today presents with just 17,100 kilometres from new and marks a bookend of Ferrari’s F40 production. This example is available to view at our showrooms outside London immediately.
