1977 Mercedes-Benz 350SL R107

When people think about Mercedes, most people think about an SL. The SL they’re thinking about, is likely an R107, not surprising given its 18 year production run. The R107 is the epitome of Mercedes, they’re built to a standard higher than most space programs, and they have more style than the cover of the latest issue of GQ.

The first production R107s rolled off the line in April of 1971, with the SLC coupe variant production starting a few months later in October. R107s have adorned the driveways of many celebrities, Bob Marley and Jay Kay to name just a couple.

This example is a 350SL, built in 1977. The car externally is finished in Astral Silver, a colour that complements the classy lines of the R107 well. The paintwork is in excellent condition, with only a few minor marks to show for its close to five decades. This is in part thanks to a series of bodywork

renovations made in 1991, but also the care that has been afforded by the car’s owners.

The wheels are traditional “Mexican Hat/Bundt” style alloys, the perfect accoutrement to a Mercedes of this era. They’re free from any nasty curb rash and have a matching set of tyres. The bright work, light clusters and roof, which is a newer replacement blue part fitted in 2012 are all also in excellent condition.

Step inside and you’re greeted by a glorious, navy-blue MB Tex interior. The blue seats, matched with the roof, contrast the Silver nicely and offer something a bit more special than the standard black or grey. The seats themselves are in excellent condition, with no rips or tears.

The carpets, also blue, are also in good order, and the dash and centre console are free from any cracks or wear. The gauge cluster and ancillary gauges are all working as they should, and the odometer shows just 112,500 miles. The gauge cluster, centre console and interior have all been subject to a renovation.

Under the bonnet you’re greeted with a 3.5-litre M116 V8, a great engine, that offers the driver an abundance of power, and torque. This unit was sourced from a donor vehicle, as the original required replacement, despite this prior to fitting, an assortment of gaskets, clips and fasteners were replaced.

The work was completed by Marque specialists “The SL Shop” has resulted in a leak free engine bay, and a car that runs smoothly. The engine is mated to an automatic gearbox, which changes gear smoothly, offering the driver the cruising capabilities that you would expect of a Mercedes.

The underside of the car is corrosion free, this is thanks to the extensive body repairs that were taken on in the early 1990s. In 2011, the car visited The Wax Works, for a full underbody rust prevention treatment. This work means that you can enjoy this SL, without fear of impending bills for costly rust repair.

Despite the replacement engine, the car comes with what can only be described as an enormous collection of records and invoices. With paperwork dating right the way back to what must’ve been the earliest of MOTs in 1980. The car has been maintained with no expense spared, and since 2013 has been cared for by the SL Shop.

An R107 SL is a classic that you can enjoy all-day, every day. It seamlessly blends style with usability, in a way that a modern Mercedes can’t quite achieve. It’s not shouty like a newer example, it’s understated yet appreciated. It could be the perfect addition to your garage, be it for a weekend cruise through the cotswolds, or as a daily commuter into London, as a 1977 model it is exempt from the ULEZ!
