The M-Class is Mercedes-Benz back at its best. The styling is understated and elegant, the interior is comfortable and attractive, plus it drives well – both on and off-road – the whole package oozes subtle sophistication. There are some cracking engines too, including a whisper-quiet V6 diesel, a very powerful 4.2-litre diesel and a sublime 5.0-litre V8. And if that's not enough, a 510bhp 6.3-litre AMG model which is covered in a separate review. Although the M-Class doesn't come cheap, list prices are close to that of similar off roaders and there's plenty of standard equipment. In October 2008 it was facelifted with slight exterior tweaks (including new headlights) while the diesel models were made cleaner and more economical.The M-Class received a five-star crash safety rating from Euro NCAP which is the maximum rating available. As well as dual front, side and window airbags, ABS with brake assist, electronic stability programme, anti-skid control and seatbelt pre-tensioners, it also comes with 'Pre-Safe'. This system senses that the car may be about to be involved in a accident and prepares the key safety systems for a possible collision – the seatbelts are tightened, it moves the seats into a better position and closes the sunroof if the car is about to roll. Security features include an alarm, immobiliser and remote central locking. The M-Class adapts well to family life. The boot's a good size, the rear seats have a 60/40 split and they can be folded down too (removable cushions can be specified for a flat load area). There's a total of 2,012 litres of storage space and enough room for items up 2.10 metres in length. Although the glovebox contains the CD autochanger, it doesn't mean less storage space.Compared to the previous M-Class, the interior is vastly improved. The driving position is excellent and the seat offers great side and lower back support along with multiple adjustment. The steering wheel adjusts (electrically on some models) for height and reach and it's easy to find a position that's comfortable for longer trips. There's also a multi-function steering wheel, to control the stereo and trip computer. Although it's a familiar sight on the American market, the 'stick-selector' (see gallery) auto gearshift may not be familiar to UK buyers. It's on a stalk by the steering wheel while manual changes can be made with buttons behind the steering wheel. Quality is excellent and the upmarket interiors give it a suitably classy feel. A well packaged interior means five adults can travel in comfort. As a four-seater, the M-Class makes a convincing case as a long distance cruiser. The ride is smooth, the seats supportive in the right areas and there's plenty of head and legroom for all passengers. Superb sound insulation – and improved engine technology – means that the diesels remains quiet, even under heavy acceleration. Check our website for more stock.
