Alfa Romeo's highly successful combination of compact cars with imposing performance began with the Giulietta in 1954. In 1962 long after this formula was well established, the Giulia was introduced being one of Alfa Romeo's many and most successful designs produced under the patronage of Dr Orazio Satta Puglia. The Giulia's ultimate incarnation - the Sprint Speciale was almost unrecognisable after the work extraordinary work of Carrozzeria Bertone. The curvaceous SS's shape was developed in the wind tunnel, and when combined with the 112 bhp version of Alfa's classic twin cam engine it resulted in a notable top speed of 125 mph. Other improvements included front disc brakes as well as additional instrumentation in the dashboard.
The car presents a wonderful harmony between aggressive aerodynamic flair and delicate Italian elegance.
This example is one of an estimated 25 examples that were delivered new to the United Kingdom and from new it was presented in a most stunning combination of Rosso over a Crema and Rosso hide interior.
Under the current ownership since 2017 the car is presented in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition having been maintained by Bell Sport & Classic in recent years and comes accompanied by an extensive history file containing invoicing, maintenance and correspondence with well-regarded specialists.
Unveiled at the 1957 Turin Motor Show, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale was a definitive statement in Italian automotive artistry.
Designed by Franco Scaglione of Bertone and inspired by Alfa’s experimental Berlina Aerodinamica Tecnica (B.A.T.) concept cars and featured one of the most evocative silhouettes to ever grace the road.
The first prototype of the Giulietta SS was presented in 1957 at the Turin Motor Show. After two more prototypes were presented in car shows, the official presentation of the production version for the press was on the 24th June 1959 on the Monza race track. The bigger engined 1.6 litre Giulia series replaced the Giulietta and was introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show. As Giulietta is the diminutive for Giulia in Italian, the new Giulia name was a wordplay hinting that the new car was a grown-up version of the Giulietta.
Powered by a lively 1,570-cc twin-cam inline-four engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, the Giulia SS produced a spirited 112 horsepower. Its slippery, wind-cheating design enabled a top speed of over 120 mph—an impressive figure for its time and a testament to its sporting ambitions.
Production ended in 1965, with only 1,366 examples of the Giulia Sprint Speciale built.
