1966 Ford Cortina MK1 GT
The GT was very much the sporting choice of the hugely popular Cortina range, pioneering the fast-expanding market for affordable performance saloons in the ‘never had it so good’ years of the 1960’s. The GT was a significant upgrade with lowered suspension and the 1500 cc engine tuned to produce 78 bhp, a big gain on the 60 bhp of the standard 1500cc Super. To achieve this power hike the GT gained a more aggressive camshaft profile, a reworked cylinder head with larger ports, a tubular exhaust manifold and a Weber 28/36 DCD twin choke carburettor.
The GT was much praised as a lively performer by the motoring press, Autocar managing a lively 13.9 second 0-60 mph time with a top speed of 94mph.
Sadly most GT’s met their end many years ago and it is consequently difficult to find a correct and original example. This car is that rare jewel, an original UK supplied GT in great order throughout following extensive restoration work. On the road the GT continues to impress, it is clearly very well sorted and drives with a surprising alacrity and turn of speed as noted by motoring writers in period. A recent invoice on file details the full inspection and subsequent mechanical work completed which includes a major service, new clutch and main oil seals together with extensive work to the brakes and finally a full engine out detail.
A really super and appealing piece of motoring history, eminently usable and not so expensive for an increasingly rare model.
