Volvo XC40 Estate 1.5 T3 [163] R-DESIGN 5dr Geartronic First Drive Volvos smallest SUV, the XC40, continues to hit a sweet spot between style, practicality and that understated Scandinavian cool. In this R-DESIGN guise, paired with the 1.5-litre T3 petrol engine and smooth-shifting Geartronic automatic, it delivers a distinctly premium experience without shouting about it. Under the bonnet lies a turbocharged three-cylinder producing 163bhp. It wont snap your neck, but its eager enough, delivering a smooth surge of torque that suits the XC40s laid-back, refined character. The 7-speed dual-clutch auto is well-mannered, if a little reluctant to downshift when pushed, but for everyday driving it glides along effortlessly. The R-DESIGN treatment adds a welcome dose of flair. Gloss black trim, larger alloys, and a contrasting roof lend it a sporty edge, while inside, Volvos signature clean, minimalist cabin design impresses. Soft-touch materials, supportive sports seats and the vertically-oriented touchscreen lend a premium, tech-savvy feel. Despite the estate badge, this is more crossover than classic wagon think high driving position, ample cabin space, and a 452-litre boot that expands generously with the rear seats down. Its practical enough for families, yet compact enough for city streets. On the move, the XC40 is composed and comfortable. It wont excite keen drivers, but ride quality is excellent, refinement is top-tier, and theres a reassuring solidity to everything it does. All told, the XC40 T3 R-DESIGN is stylish, sensible and just a little bit different a Swedish answer to the usual premium SUV suspects.
